Buying a suit for my sister's wedding

Hey! So my sister is getting married 29th December this year and I want to buy a nice suit for the day. I'm thinking a pin-strip grey one? I don't own any suits at all so would appreciate any advice in making the purchase. Also I'd like a high quality one, maybe a designer one, so how much we talking there? I'd be willing to spend a few hundred euro, €600 max though, not really sure yet! Thanks in advance!

If you're in Dublin, head into Louis Copeland. They'll sort you out with something custom fitted and they're not the megastar-expensive type of place some people think they are.

You can get a very nice suit for €300.

You can also go into M & S - they do decent suits from €150 or so. However, they're more for business use really; There's nothing like having a good quality fitted suit for special occasions.

This sounds cool. I don't think I want to bother with high street stores, I want a nice quality one that will last a good few few years. What about Brown Thomas? Like a Canali one? Would that break the bank?

Also what colour would be best for this time of year? I do really like them pinstripe grey ones!

If you're looking to spend a couple of hundred please don't waste your time going into Topman/Tommy Hilfger where they'll be happy to sell you any kind of suit. I'd definitely go with the person who recommended Louis Copeland. Give them a price guide, tell them what you're looking for and they'll pick out something for you that will fit you really well, if not they'll tailor it for you also.

Personally I'd recommend Abraham Menswear on South Anne Street (just off Grafton Street). The lads in there are top guys, if I'm buying suits it's my first place of call. They'd start off around the 400 mark (limited enough range) and work upwards. They do tailor made suits also although probably just outside your price range. As I've said I can personally vouch for these guys, Paul spent a good hour with me buying my first few and I've gone back again and again. As with Louis they'll tailor if needs be for no extra cost and will do work on the suit in future should you fill in or out!!

Don't waste your time in Brown Thomas. Overpriced and poor service. You're likely to come out having spent 50% more than you need to and a suit which may not fit correctly.
Specialist suit shops really do give the best service, and will often resize/refit a suit after a couple of years for little or no fee. The likes of Brown Thomas will ream you for that kind of service.

There are all sorts of nonsense guides for suits and the time of year, but your next wedding might be a summer one, so just go for a suit that you like and which looks good on you. Be wary of going for anything too loud or outrageous. You only may get a year or two out of it before you change your mind and decide that it's hideous.

If you can I would recommend going down to the Savoy Taylors Guild (spelling?) in the Kildare Village. They have some pretty nice suits in there for not too much money, the last time I was in there they had a lovely grey Peter Werth suit for €150 reduced from over €300 (not in my size though). I ended up getting a different grey one and it was very nice, just stuck a black shirt and a nice tie underneath and it looked pretty sharp and I can mix it up with a white shirt and black tie either. The staff are pretty helpful and they will alter it if needs be.

I just got a suit for my wedding last week. Did all the shops around Dublin and experienced the full spectrum of customer service from ignorant nonchalance, to vicious commission hunting to proper, informed advice and assistance.

In the end I got a suit in Suitable Company - can't recommend them highly enough in terms of knowledge and value http://www.suitablecompany.com/

(bit of a pain in the arse that they're no longer in town though. Had to slog out Ballymount but it was worth it)

Hi again. So I've looked around shops in Cork for a suit. I didn't like any in Brown Thomas, and the ones in the other shops that I did like and which the staff recommended, were both Tommy Hilfigers and €500. Am I just paying for the Tommy Hilfiger brand?...which isn't actually that high quality a brand I'm presuming, compared to a Gieves and Hawkes suit. Saville Menswear in Cork more or less said I should go for the Tommy rather than me seeking a custom made suit. I want a mid or dark grey pinstripe. So I'm thinking I'll have a look in Dublin soon. Louise Copeland sounds promising. I would love to go to Saville Row in London but I presume my €700 budget is too low for there, also this is the first suit I'll ever buy so maybe I shouldn't spend a fortune on it? Thanks!

They are trying to sell you a label. Don't fall for it.
And if they mention slimfit you should run like the wind. Slimfit is a trend and though trends in mens suits do hang around for a long time the slimfit suit past it's sell by date. A good suit will last you 20 years. A slimfit suit will last you 2 years and no options when it comes to altering it.
    (/Anti slimfit rant :))

If you have a chunk of money to spend then get something made to measure. Copeland's will serve you well. So will M&S for a lot cheaper. Ask them about their made to measure deals.
Remember to set aside cash for your shirts, shoes and accessories.

Get a classic fit and consider blue rather then gray or pinstripe. Blue will serve you better on more occasions then any other colour (apart from black but who wants to look like a waiter?;):D)

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.
