Cannabis use and Chromosome damage ?

Over the years I have heard of suggestions that pro-longed and heavy use of Cannabis by either a male or female can result in some sort of chromosome damage with consequent birth defects in children born to such a parent/s.

Is there research to support this ? Have any scientific papers been published ? Or is it just speculation and scare stories operating behind a veneer of science ?

not sure about chromosome damage but cannabis abuse in adolescence (critical time for neurodevelopment) carries a statistically significant increased risk of schizophrenia in early adulthood.

Funny you mention that , I have a friend whose 17 year old stepson has been ' sectioned ' recently for schizophrenia , medical advice is that it is probably linked to the lad smoking a lot of ' wacky baccy ' in the last few months.

I was under the impression that this was still in doubt whether you had a higher rate of cannabis users amongst people who are / predisposed to psychosis/schizophrenia or whether cannabis use caused psychosis/schizophrenia?

To the best of my knowledge ( I am open to correction of course ) the evidence suggests that heavy Cannabis use can act as ' trigger ' in those who have a pre-disposition to Schizophrenia. It does not cause the illness rather it can act a ' wake-up call ' in those who are prone to it.

Have you a paper for that? I've been asked about this a few times in paediatric A+E by worried parents.

You will drive yourself mad with that one, too many papers on each side of the fence. None of which will give the ultimate asnswer

Can someone re-explain the question to me.

    are you talking about
    • heavy cannibis use by either/both parents prior to and during conception
    • heavy cannabis use prior to and post-fertilisation by mother
    • or heavy cannibis use by either/both prior to conception but perhaps a short break

I'd be interested if there was a link between drug use in your 20s and the increase of chromosomal/NTDs to your baby in your 30s. Right now, I can't imagine a link

I asked the question as there are a couple I know where the male is an exceptionally heavy cannabis user - they have had 3 children ( one of whom was stillborn ) and the other 2 have very serious issues which will make independent living as adults unlikely - I was just wondering might it be linked to his dope smoking ? Mother never touches the stuff.
