Claiming tax back

    Hi folks,

I didn't want to hijack AnimeRulez' thread so I hope it's ok to start another one. I think I'm entitled to tax back but am not sure. My situation is as follows:

I began working at the start of April '09 and will be finishing at the end of July '10. I'm resigning, not being made redundant and won't be claiming social welfare when I finish. I was never deducted emergency tax.

Am I correct in thinking that I'm owed tax back for both '09 and '10 since I didn't work the full year in either? If so, I should wait until four weeks after I become unemployed and then submit a P50? Will one form cover both years?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Starting at the end, no one P50 will not cover both years, each tax year is dealt with separately, and a P50 only relates to the current year, so you can only claim back tax for 2010 using P50(s).

Whether or not you have overpaid tax for 2009 depends on what basis you were taxed on your employer's payroll (week1month1 basis or a cumulative basis).

Easiest thing you can do to sort 2009 is phone the PAYE helpline (or register for Revenue's PAYE Anytime online service), and request a P21 balancing statement for 2009, which will calculate (and forward to you) any refund due for 2009.

I registered for PAYE anytime and got my tax back for 2009 (which was pretty whopping:D) by requesting a P21.

Can I request a P50 through this online service? I can't seem to figure it out. Do I need to wait until the end of the year?

No I don't think you can do a P50 thru PAYEanytime, but if you just google P50 you'll find the form, it's a piece of cake to fill out, even if you just call into the customer service desk of your local tax office (bring the remaining parts of your P45 with you) then they'll help you.
