Right now this is my favorite V8 sports car:

And this my favorite V8 muscle car:

Hard to find a decent video of the Dodge's sound.
But they both sound absolutely heavenly!! Just like a V8 should!!! Loud with that characteristic low throaty burble roar of the V8 muscle we've all come to know. Not a big fan of the high pitched high revving scream of a Ferrari V8.

Not a V8 but the NSX still sounds good for a little V6:

A ridiculous looking car that just looks wrong from every angle except straight-on. Stupid, stupid stupid.

    And i want one.:o

Seriously, V8 muscle car that can take sheets of 8x4....oh yes. Not exactly a frugal way of getting rid of an oul washing machine though.

No V8 anywhere, ever, will beat the sound of a V8 Muscle Car

    And finally, my little beast!

Wot? No Chevy 350? FFS! Makes the hair stand on the back of my neck!

Honda is the sole engine supplier for the Indycar series, are all V8s. Kinda ironic as the company doesn't have a V8 in a commercial offering. Completely different to the Chevy.

3.5L, 600bhp, redline just over 10k rpm. Nowhere near as awesome as the Chevy.

same here, m5 was really not bad, but all of them cant even compare with american v8. not euro not jap can do such an awesome gloriuos sounds like american v8...

i know but the fact that they were all scared to rev it out doesn't do them justice. any v8 at 8200rpm sounds god like, american v8's rarely go above 6k and get very poor bhp per liter. alot more torque than European v8's though

Some don't go past 5k, but it doesn't matter.

US V8s are typically very large displacement by comparison to euro engines, and that's where they get their awesomeness from.

How many euro V8s are over 6 litre? How many euro *any* layout are above 6 litre! Remember, a Chevy 350 small block is 5.7 litres!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66,122 ✭✭✭✭unkel
    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    Agreed, displacement is everything :)

Here's the sound of the V8 engine of my nearly 25 year old car at fairly low revs:

    Hmm... There's the Mercedes C/E 63AMG...
Apart from that I could list a few V12s... There's the Pagani Zonda F with its 7.3L AMG V12, There's the Lamborghini Murcielago 6.5l V12, there's the Merc CL63AMG... Can't think of any more for now...

But I get what you say about American engines. The legendary 426 Hemi engine was a 7l beast! The Corvette Stingray ZR1 had a 454 Big Block 7.4l engine.

On the small side by American standards, but sounds awesome at the same time.

Small euro inline sixes, or worse still TDIs, are majorly sucky by comparison.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,171 ✭✭✭af_thefragile

^You can't compare a Diesel with american muscle.

Speaking of 6s, I quite like the sound of a Porsche flat six though.

Unfortunately V12s don't have the rawness of V8s due to being "smooth"... they're essentially two straight sixes on the one crank.

A supercar has to be a V12 though. They're just more refined...
I love the deep grunt of an American V8 but I like the refined howl of an Italian V12 more. Its like the ultimate motoring engine.

Nope, wouldn't agree. Only decent sounding V12 is an Aston Martin.

Lamborghini Miura? Pagani Zonda?! Even the Murcielago sounds great.

I will agree the V8 is louder but performance wise a V8 seems to make more noise and less power than the V12 which feels like its finely tuned to for the high performance of the car its fit in. Its like when you think of a high performance exotic car, you think of a V12 supercar.

V8 muscle is more crude and less refined compared to the V12 performance. V12 sounds exotic and expensive. V8 sounds more like a blue collar workshop machine if you get what I mean.

Yup, well it's probably a bit more now due to wear, but on the small side for our US brethern who would say life starts at 5.7L ;)

It's funny how the Europeans have never really made a great line of engines. They came close a few times, but the most enduring line we seem to be blessed with is the mighty VAG 1.9 TDI. The Americans must be quietly laughing to themselves.

i think he ment aswell, that euro newer had such huge V8, not v12 etc. As to be honest V8 sounds way better then V8. Its like V8 is that golden spot!

7.4l hemi? MMMMMmmmmm..... when you start engine i bet all car just jumps lol!

Americans maybe not making moust efficient V8s, but they sound and feel the best! And when you drive one, i bet you dont care it has less hp then some euro car, just becouse the sound of it, makes you forget everything!!!

As much as i love the yank V8 muscle cars its us europeans that are usually laughing at them to be honest.;)

American motor industry was on its knees up untill last year. For years they built cars that were completely inferior to euro/jap competitors as far as build quality & refinement go.

Do you think they were laughing at us when Ford, GM & Chrysler all asked for government bailouts a few years ago because they were on the verge of collapse?

Only GM. Don't forget European car makers were also in trouble.

They're laughing at us cos we have decided to put up with the awful rattles and smells of 4-banger diesel by VW and the like.

They said fúck that shít and chose a petrol V8 soundtrack to their daily lives.

Yeah it was a bit muted alright. The mustang was definitely the best sounding.

The Aston was unreal as well.
