Road Traffic Notice - Road Closure Sarsfield Street Monday 5th July until
    Friday, 16th July 2010

Limerick City Council wish to advise motorists and road users that Sarsfield Street from its junction with Henry Street to its junction with O’Connell Street will close to thru vehicular traffic at 10.00am on Monday, 5th July, 2010.
This temporary road closure is necessary to enable the commencement of Phase 4 of the Limerick City Streetscape Improvement Works.

This temporary road closure will contribute to significant traffic delays along Henry Street, Patrick Street and the City centre area.

Local diversions will be signposted and traffic on route from Henry Street and Sarsfield Bridge on route to William Street will be diverted along Liddy Street, Honan’s Quay, Francis Street and Patrick Street.

Motorists should note that significant delays are likely to occur on Sarsfield Bridge, Ennis Road and Henry Street during the period of this temporary road closure.

It'll be a pain in the arse alright.
On the bright side, it should sort out a few problems on that little stretch. They need to do something about all those taxis, for one.

I'd argue there are other areas in greater need of attention but progress is progress. The taxi drivers will have to find somewhere new to double park.

Short term pain for long term gain. You can't improve a street scape unless you close it to vehicular traffic. As an aside, I think the thread title is a little dramatic and typical of this forum's tunnel vision (no pun intended)

    Sarsfield St Pedestrianisation to Commence
Much more positive than the title used.

For those doom merchants reading, don't forget that with the imminent opening of the Tunnel, vehicular traffic will be dramatically reduced anyway.

For such a small street its going to cause a huge traffic mess.

They should have waited for the tunnel to open.

The most horrible street ever to be still standing.

Oh, and lets not forget Broad Street while we have the fantasy bulldozer. ;)

Fcuk it, just demolish the entire city centre, Limerick is one of the ugliest major cities/towns in Ireland. Thomas St is looking well these days, and theres a few other nice parts, but O'Connell/William/Cruises area is ugly as sin.

I'm all for doing up the streets but what they are doing here is a flippin joke, they are going to bring out the footpaths and remove one lane for traffic. Yes it looks good but lets look at the facts...

    1. The town is ruined as you cant get around it from the huge tailbacks from all the new traffic lights..

    2. There isnt enough parking spaces on the streets where they are needed, its fine to say there are loads of carparks but if you are trying to collect something from a shop you can forget it..They also forget that people live on these streets and as such require utilitys to be provided such as the work I do...you cannot park ten streets away and expect some1 to walk there with materials...

    3. This is simply a ploy to cause more traffic jams to try and force people to use the new tunnel under construction...which makes me wonder why we need the useless bus lanes in the first place...if there was adequate room for traffic to move then no bus lanes would be needed...

    4. When a munster match is on they switch off all the lights which is fine but they cant do it when theres a delay or an accident on one particular route..

Why cant they simply delay the work until the tunnel is operational ....???

The Sarsfield St. 2 week closure has now been extended by another 4 weeks. Surely they knew this when they started, they have spent the first 2 weeks digging up the street....was it all going to magically finish itself at the end of the 2 weeks.
This seems to be typical of Limerick City Council...spend money on media announcments and printing signs and then decide to tell us
"Did we say 2 weeks ? Ah no, we really meant 6 weeks."

By the way, isn't the Rosbrien Road due for it's annual 4-week closure around now ???

Yep, there were guys out there during the week measuring and what not. So expect serious congestion from the traffic that wants to come into the city centre that has been blocked off by the road change at the end of the motorway, think August is when the Rosbrien work is due to commence. The Greensfields road is also meant to be having work done on it and on it's footpaths, I think the work is due to start in August/September which will tie in nicely with the below.

To add to the congestion, the laying of Gaspipes that has being ongoing on O'Connell Avenue for months now will be starting further work in the Ballinacurra Gardens and Ballinacurra Road area just in time to coincide with schools going back.

OK,but at least make the area more pedestrian friendly by being, relatively, gurrier free

Just spotted this on AAroadwatch.ie. Traffics gonna get even worse.

Limerick - Road works are in place at Upper William Street 24/7 until further notice, delays are likely while these works are in place View Map
    Updated: 16/07/2010 11:34:28

A single traffic lane will be maintained at all times during the works.

I think a bit of disruption is ok if it benifits the city. I hope every phase of pededtrianisation goes ahead, it will really improve the place!!! (If there are any shops left to go into!!)

The whole city is backed up from about 7am til 9 or 10pm. Its a joke, every single street is busy during the week. I dont even bother trying to get through town anymore between 1 and 6

And the William street job has a listed completion time of December 2011 from when it starts, so look forward to yet more congestion in the town centre as there is a lot of traffic that needs to use the town and William street daily, so the tunnel will be of no advantage to that traffic.

Ah well, just another reason to do any shopping in the Crescent Shopping centre or to drive to Cork for stuff if a decent city centre shopping experience is wanted.

Well done to the local planners for their normal hash up of things, empty shop units and closed off streets, a winning combination. My heart goes out to the many shop owners and retailers in the town.

How do you suggest they rip up the street surfaces and modernise the city centre without closing or restricting these streets? There was similar disruption when Grafton Street, Shop Street and Patrick's street were remodeled.

Well the starting time of the william street resurfacing is nicely timed to fall alongside the closing of the Rosbrien road for a month for resurfacing, the closing of the greenfields road for work and the starting of the laying of gas pipes between Punches cross and the new flyover bridge near the shopping centre.

And if I remember right there is work planned for upper Mulgrave street as well at the same time.

I don't dispute that Limerick badly needs to be modernised and has needed that for 20 years now as the town centre is an eyesore when compared to the centre of Cork or Dublin, hell even compared to Galway's main shopping streets, but having so many projects starting at pretty much the same time smacks of little of no communication between those who granted permission for the works, or worse it shows no concept of the congestion that having a number of main routes being worked on at the same time would cause.

I worked on the works in bedford row and thomas st and i shudder when i see the photograph of all the same senior engineers, planners and architecht incompetents posing proudly to waste more tax payers money, the only one missing from the picture is the designer who flies in from england when it suits him while the whole job is stopped awaiting his decisision.just go along the works, have a look at the completely unnessecary 4" slabs brought in from france disintegrating and the money wasted trying to remove dirt.
i couldnt even start to tell you the money that was wasted on "oh i think ive changed my mind on this"take it out and ill come up with something else,or im not sure about that i will have to talk to some other incompetent about that",job delayed, money down drain, these were the idiots running the job while us poor idiots worked through cold, rain, muck and sewage and taking abuse from shopkeepers, pedestrians and motorists because of these idiots.
This may be a long rant but we said it at the time about the money being wasted by these idiots and it just makes my blood boil to see them smiling for their new photograph, some of them even promoted to carry on the carnage and blame the poor f**kers on the ground.

Side affect of having three organisations running the greater Limerick urban area, imo, but I'd rather put up with 12 months of continual disruption then face into 5 or 6 years of long term disruption.

In the end, if we want a nicer city centre, we need to get these works done.

Drove up Patrick street today heading towards O'Connell street. Lights went red at junction of Sarsfield street and William street.
Think about it. No traffic can come up Sarsfield street so why aren't lights synchronised to only go red to let pedestrians cross. I was fuming waiting for the lights to change to green again.

The people involved in planning these works are paid big bucks, surely they can get the basics right.

The traffic lights are co ordinated properly. Sarsfield St junction pedestrian lights are green all the time. Coming up from Patrick St, people need to cross there too, so the lights do go red there for the traffic some times, ya know?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,287 ✭✭✭slinky2000

ive been stopped many a time at those lights now and they seem synchronised to me!
