Where to get Service done

    Hi there,

I bought a brand new Peugeot 406 2ltr Diesel back in 2002 and since then I've had it serviced at the Peugeot Dealer ( firstly the one I bought it from, and now the one closest to my home in Naas ). I've stuck to getting the services done when due and have kept my log book up to date, as I thought that would be good if I wanted to sell the car on.

The car now has over 140k miles on the clock, and I don't have any plans or funds to upgrade the car for at least a year or two.

So, with that in mind, and knowing that the car will likely be worth very little by the time I'll be able to sell it, should I continue getting my services done in the Peugeot Garage? They're professional and helpful there, but I reckon I'm paying a lot more ( especially Labour costs ) than I would be if I went to a 'generic' garage. But if I did that, does it lessen the value of the car and can I still get the log book stamped etc.

So, where's the best place to get the car serviced? Any advice welcome, thanks!

    J.

Your Peugeot dealer must love you. :D

You really have not needed main dealer servicing for some time, a good independent is the way to go and you will save a packet. A FSH well help you sell the car in the future, but you will do no harm to the cars value by going to an independent for servicing.

There is really no need to get servicing done with the dealer once your car is out of warranty, alot of people never go back to them as they are overpriced. Any garage with proper equipment and qualified staff will do the exact same job, use the exact same parts and charge considerably less. and in answer to your question no it will not devalue your car in any way to have servicing done elswhere. PM me for info on my garage just outside naas if you want.

Excellent, thanks for the replies! I'm going to save my sanity and not calculate how much I might have saved since the warranty ran out!

Anyhow, I take it then that I can still get my log book stamped etc. by an independant garage, it doesn't have to be a Peugeot Dealer?

It's funny, the things that you don't know that you really should know. Good to learn something new today...

The book can be stamped by any dealer - with a stamp.. ;)

Here's a mad thing though. I have Citroen which is now out of warranty and guess who quoted the lowest price for it's last service.. a Citroen dealer!

True, it's certainly worth giving a main dealer a chance to quote, a lot have dropped their prices significantly.

Ah, but the problem here is that anyone can quote you for the service ( i.e. changing oil, changing filters, doing checks etc. ) and that's exactly what the cost will be.

If, however, they find something else while they're doing the service, then either you get them to do it there and then, or you have to take the car back, then go get quotes from different places for the repairs they say are needed, and then arrange to be without a car for another day etc. etc.

So going with the place that offers the cheapest service does not always mean you're getting the best price for any other work that's needed, right? I guess you have to bite the bullet and either get it done there and then or go get more quotes for the extra work...

Agreed, Crap-Fit are great at this as are a number of other motoring related services.

I used Castlepark Motors (I think that is the correct name) in Limerick.
