Main VW Dealer Cork - Opinions on quote

Basically I asked the main dealer in Cork (BWM) to do this :

    http://vagdrivers.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=23822

First they quoted me 8 hours labour, then when I told them it just sat in behind the high pressure fuel pump they said 3.5 hours labour (about €300) not inluding parts. I asked them to check again as I have seen thousands of posts on other forums about people doing it themselves and dealers in the UK/USA doing it in 20 mins. But they said 3.5 hours is the time as the pump has to be "specially aligned" and its a long job.

Am I wrong in thinking 3.5 hours for this is a bit extreme?

I don't want to come aross as a know it all but I think 3.5 hours is ridiculous? Here is a how to: http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102858
    Thanks

Try Noel Deasys (VW service centre now) or Cashmans Seat for a quote. Aidan in Cashmans is usually quite good

It looks an easy job from the write up, why not try it yourself?

Have you phoned other main dealers for prices and their estimates on how long the work should take?

If you've seen it been done in 20 mins, you have a write up and you'd read it a thousand times, where's the argument? 3.5 hours is too long so.

I don't want to come across like an ass saying how simple it is. They are the trained mechanis not me.

Most VW dealers don't seem to know/want to know about doing this job. Anything slightly away from the regular and it's like hitting a wall.

I don't really have the tools to do it myself and would prefer a garage to do it to be honest. Have someone doing it next week (vw indy) just curious as to the way the garage approached it and peoples opinions.

Just as an end to this, got a quote to supply and fit the cam follower from a very respected independent VW mechanic - €65. What a right shower the dealership are.

It wasn't as it happens, spoke to him yesterday and he said he is booked solid until next week and to give him a shout then if I wasn't sorted!

Showrooms don't come cheap, wages, employers PRSI etc, insurance (not cheap) etc etc. Also they probably simply didn't want to do the job so decided to quote you a fat price.

Business must be better than we thought!

Without having other main dealer quotations, it's impossible to know if this Dealer was profiteering. There could be a list of things that also need to be checked officially after the '20 minute job' is done that dealers must do. We simply don't have all the facts, and remember main dealer labour is much more expensive than a good independent garage too.

I'd be surprised if the Dealer in question was a million miles away in price from any other main Dealer quote.

He said the pump needed to be "specially aligned" and thats what took the time. That is complete nonsense. There are 3 bolts arranged in a triangular pattern and the lad today had it off and on in about 15 minutes.

Anyway I'm calling in next week for a written estimate to : remove fuel pump, change cam follower and refit fuel pump. This is what I asked him and nothing else. He said 3.5 hours as he didn't want to "put his lads under pressure". I'll scan in the itemised quote next week when I collect it.

Edit: I thought I posted this already here but I got a quote from Noel Deasys in Cork and they said about 2 hours for valve and cam follower but could be less. They were allowing 2 hours to be sure. I thought that was perfectly fair. Remember again BWM said 3.5 hours just for follower.

Your spot on. They didn't know what the job involved and basically had no interest. If they said that straight on then I'd have no complaints.

Again without quotations from other Dealers isn't impossible to say if the Dealer is profiteering or not. When I sold MINIs, we had to quote for 3.5 hours of labour to fit spot lights. A local auto electrician I used could do it in 40 minutes. But the official, recognised and warranted way required installing them, coding up the modules, headlight alignment, and the wires had to be routed one way and one long awkward way only.

Things aren't always simple, quick, cut and dry, and I think without comparing prices to other main Dealers you're being unfair on this particular Dealer. There is a possibility that the Dealer has to follow a certain instruction manual for doing the job your indy mechanic did in 20 minutes, and their guide might be much more intensive.

[EDIT] Seen your edit above regarding Noel Deasys. Sorry for the confusion, and fair play for shopping around.

I edited my last post but Noel Deasy said max 2 hours for the cam follower and valve but may be less.

Edit: Ha ha we are going around in circles. Look I'm going to leave the matter here, I'm sorted, the car is flying and nobody got hurt! In fairness to Noel Deasy they said they never did the job but had a look and wanted to allow a bit of time. That's a spot on atitude in my book no problem with that. I just thought the attitude and the whole thing with the other crowd was a bit rich and v poor customer service.

    Case closed anyway.

    Hi gpf101,

I'm looking to find a good independent vw specialist in Cork. I've searched the forum and arrived at your thread. Would you be happy to recommend the guy that sorted your issue above?

    Thanks,

    Mark
