Products/services that you would like to have in Limerick.

Just thought I would start this thread in an effort to make it easier to find certain products/services in Limerick. I often have a look on boards for certain things but it usually involves searching different forums and most of the answers seem to be for places in Dublin. We all know that business people snoop here (with some posting:D) and maybe this thread could help people either find things easier or give suggestions to Limerick business people. On a side note I have been in Cork and Dublin recently and Limerick City looks like it is really struggling in comparison - the place is like a ghost town!

Anyway one thing I would love to see in Limerick is a proper craft beer pub that stocks beers from around the world - kind of like Abbots in Cork. I think Limerick is the only city that doesn't have a pub like this. The selection of craft beers in the liquor stores here is also pretty poor, particularly American Craft Beer. I have been searching for Blue Moon, Flying Dog and Sierra Nevada beer with no luck so far :( You can get all of those in Cork, Dublin and Galway but not in Limerick.

There are loads of other things I can't find but I'll post those later.

Definitely a proper selection of craft beers in a pub. My biggest gripe with going to town for a pint.
The off licenses are better than they used to be, Macs on the Ennis road has some good craft beers. Superquinn has sierra nevada pale ale, adnams innovation etc.

Sweet - thanks for the Superquinn suggestion, never go there but I will be now!:D

Hmmm well thats not exactly what I want this thread to be about - I meant products or services offered by shops etc. I think there is plenty of other threads about the Gardai/Council/Polititians etc.

A shop that sells Vibram Fivefingers

    A decent city centre cinema.

More by way of theatre facilities. All Limerick really has is the stand in Belltable and the loft. Smaller places like Waterford have far more by way of venues and quality.

A decent range of men's clothes shops in the city centre. Would like to see a Top Man, a GQ, a Tommy Hilfiger (yes there is a small one in the Crescent shopping centre) and so on.

A decent bookshop that does not have rip off prices like O Mahonys does.

A Forbidden Planet (yep I know there was one in Limerick years ago up from Tony Connoly, but it was in Limerick before it's time). The Gathering was rubbish for graphic novels and overpriced. Cork, Galway, and Dublin all have specialists stores like this.

Something like the leisureplex that is on MacCurtain st in Cork. It has bowling, pool, arcades, music, food and chill out areas. Plus they don't let the local scum infest the place.

    A proper comedy club.

A coffe shop like how Javas was.

A pub like how Quins was.

A good rock bar/club. Like how Sir Henrys was once upon a time in Cork.

Do you mean a sushi restaurant or just somewhere to buy sushi readymade? I know you can get all the ingredients in Tesco in Arthurs Quay and I am pretty sure I saw readymade Sushi somewhere around Limerick.

Hmmm had to google these, was almost afraid to:D Didn't know what to expect - a biscuit snack or something dirty. Shoes eh?

Would love a cinema in the city centre. A proper theatre would be great. Agree on the bookshop. Used to love Forbidden Planet but you have to ask is the demand there in Limerick? That closed, as did the guy on Thomas Street. Doesn't seem to be a viable business in Limerick. A comedy club would offer a great option for going out instead of the usual. Miss Javas and Quins BIG TIME. And yes a good rock bar/club is badly needed...BADLY!!!

Look at how similar shops do in Galway and Cork. The Cork one in particular I often meet people from Limerick in there when I am down there.

The guy in Thomas street never did the same range. Forbidden planet on Patrick street was in Limerick at the wrong toime imho. The shop that opened for a little bit on Denmark street never had stock, and the Gathering either never had what you wanted, or were trying to sell it to you for twice what it was online or about 25% more than the shop in the Paul Street mall in Cork.

This is going to sound very contradicting but....
I'd like a place or service for men where they can kinda do a make-over when it comes to your clothes style and hairstyle etc and still keep you looking like a redblooded hetrosexual manly man.

My fashion sense is waaaayyy out of date and have had the same hair style since my confirmation.

Cant stand clothes that have stupid designs and logos that mean nothing
so I tend to wear jeans and very plain one coloured shirts. Anytime I'm out
shopping looking at mens clothes I think a lot of them look a little to metrosexual.

Went into River Island recently and thought anything I would wear in there
    would make me look camp.

Went into Zara before and Jackets and shirts would not fit (normal clothes I was always a medium, Zara clothes I was trying on XL) They said
"Oh Sorry sir those shirts are for the Spanish man, theres an Irish section over there" (choice of words may sound insulting but she did not mean them that way, she was meerly pointing me to the non-fitted shirts)

Went into Brown Thomas and saw a pair of Brown wrinkled jeans priced
at 200 Euros! they looked the same as what you could buy in Heatons for a tenner.

Tomy Hilfiger 70-90 Euros for a feckin T-Shirt!

(Oh yeah I miss Quins, I've only gone into town to a Pub a few times since Quins closed down,
I used to live in that place)

    Thought of another one.

Would love for the Deasy brothers (They are the lads who hold the franchise for all the Timberland stores in Ireland and Nothern Ireland) to open an out of season stock shop in Limerick like they have/had down in West Cork.

Timberland products are generally top notch, and age well in terms of fashion trends, so an out of stock shop would be nice here.

Richard, Tim if you see this make it happen. :D

Yeah I know what you mean Bullets. I often look in River Island because it is easy to find stuff that fits me BUT most of it is of a style that I wouldn't be seen dead in.

You might have to open your own Mens Clothes Shop - Manly Mans Clothes for Men. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,826 ✭✭✭phill106

I never go into riverisland anymore. They seem to cater exclusively for gay men. Maybe metrosexual men, I don't know.
And just in case, this is not a gay bashing post, I just think that is the market riverisland is catering for. It is all Man Bags and impossibly slimfit clothes!
While I am on the subject, can someone tell me what is the story with size large in slim fit? Would that fit anyone? These odd sizes confuse me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 189 ✭✭NyquistFreak

When I lived in Cork, I used to practically live in the English Market, I really missed it when I moved back here, I hope the new Market under the tent thingy that just opened recently will fill the void for me!
I would like to see a better variety of locally produced fresh organic veggies and things, your man in the Country Basket on Thomas Street is sound out and does some nice stuff, and there was another fella down by the milk market for a while, not sure if he's still there though...it'll be nice that the Saturday market will be around longer from now on so you dont have to play beat-the-hangover of a Saturday early morning to get your fix like! :D

Also, and on a completely different note, how's about The Spirit Store set up all year round?! mmmmm, Spirit Store. There's loads and loads of really creative people around this city, I'd love to see some sort of (like a youth café but for artsy adults?! we have no money to spend in pubs either to be fair!) Or even a practice space type thingy to The Spirit Store's performance space, in any one of all those horrible derelict buildings around the place to encourage the creative community...actually feck it, co-op studio anyone?! There's enough of us like, between us all it could be pretty decent. Also, better than sitting round on the dole giving out that there's nothing to do. :D

Also, somewhere that deals with Three internet so you don't have to keep ringing India everytime you have a problem. Would be nice. Not hugely necessary, but nice.

+1 on the Java's/Quinns comment, god I miss those places...also, Baker Place is not really doing it for me as a High Stool substitute, sort it out (waves fist at the sky in madman fashion) or return my youth. Either is acceptable.

River Island is a British store and the style of clothes that they stock is what is currently popular/fashiobable in Britain. It always appears to be slightly out of step with attitudes/trends here.

Forbidden planet was a little overpriced but most of those type of shops are.
When Forbidden Planet moved and later closed down there was a little
coffee shop (that did not last long either) that had a very Hot Blonde haired lady work in the back where they had comics/graphic novels/Movie Models etc. She Had good prices on stuff. I bought some Resin Movie models off of her.

The Lad in Thomas street /Workspace (Hollywood empire) was extremely
overpriced, He would have made more sales if he had more realistic prices.
I know its tough for those kind of shops where stock is unusual but he
was far too unrealistic with the prices and a lot of stock he never sold.
Chatting to him before he mentioned he did not care if some stuff never sold as he would keep it.

The Cork Shop has gone down hill big time, it used to be fantastic for
weird stuff and wonderful stuff, Swords, Chess sets, movie props,
models, books, comics, retro board games from your youth, model making supplies........... now its a glorified internet cafe with a handful of comics and a few Games workshop models.

I actually Dont like tabletop gaming etc but love those kind of shops
as I adore the skill involved at creating the models and painting them.
Have a load of Lord of the Rings stuff at home that I painted over a few years,
and have probably over 1000 models left unpainted. Have 3 years worth of collecting every single issue of some Lord of the rings magazine that gave you free models sitting up in my attic still in its plastic wrappings. Not worth much now but in a few years maybe I can flog em on ebay.

I think the problem with those kind of shops not lasting is that there isn't enough of a turnover to make any profit not to mention pay the crazy rates + wages and other overheads. Which is something that is affected all kinds of shops in Limerick. Not sure what the rates are like in other cities in Ireland.

Anyway here are some more products that I would love to get my paws on in Limerick:

    Red Stripe Beer
    Makers Mark Bourbon
    Mountain Dew
    Rice A Roni
Proper Sourdough bread like what you get in the States.
    Taco Bell
    Chipotle

Maybe it would be easier to just move to America:D

Great thread! Limerick city centre has - as the OP says - become a ghost town in comparison to Dublin, Cork, Galway.

Ditto on the craft beer selection, Superquinn are getting better but other than that there is really no where else in Limerick. I would love to see a bar open up that sells a good selection of beer and good food, like the Bull and Castle and Porterhouse in Dublin.

Other than that, I just want to see more businesses opening in the city centre such as some good clothes shops and a better selection of restaurants.

Decent independent music shop that has a good selection and not overpriced.

Java's is sorely missed by all it seems, would love it back, also the high stool, used to live in that place. All these iconic Limerick venues were closed in the name of progress, then the sites/new buildings have been left sitting vacant. I'm all for progress but not at the price that's being paid for it.

A place for decent food after 6pm that isn't a restaurant and charging restaurant prices. Java's used to stay open till after 3am at one stage. Java club sandwich after nightclub? fantastic!

What else would i like to see? Again decent men's clothes shop, Theatre's, Comedy club,
