My flatmate wants to play her music through Itunes while keeping all her music files on an ex drive.

Is this possible or does she have to have the music files on her laptop?

If it is possible how do I go about sorting it out for her?

    cheers

Have a look at the apple support website, go to the iTunes section. They go into how to do that in detail. I don't have a link handy for it.

Yes, this is what I do. In iTunes, go to Edit>Preferences and click the Advanced tab. Under 'iTunes media folder location' click "change" and set the folder to be your external hard drive, e.g. E:\My Music where E is the external drive letter and My Music is where you want it all stored.

This should change your library to the external drive and it will search here in future rather than on your C drive.

Try it with one album first and then when it's all working, move the rest of your files. You should also be able to delete the old library from your C drive but make a copy just I case. Shouldn't need the C drive copy anymore though

    Hope this helps.

Have you tried deleting the iTunes database off your machine, and then rebuilding it with the new location?

    Close iTunes,
Open My Documents --> My Music
Rename or delete the iTunes Music Library.itl and .xml (Probably rename it for safety's sake)
Open iTunes (It should create empty files here)
In iTunes click on File --> Add Folder to Library

    See if this works!

(* I'm not responsible if you lose anything here!)

Yes this is possible, I run my music from an ext HD

The instructions above look the same if not similar to how I did it

Did you manage to get it working?

It's definitely possible with all media players, realplayer, wm player once you change the default folder for the music library. Only problem is from time to time plugging in and out an external hard drive, windows might assign a different drive letter to the ext disk.

All you should need to do is hold the Shift key (or the Mac alternative) while clicking on the iTunes icon (to start iTunes) and it should give you the option to "Choose iTunes Library". From here you can "Choose Library" or "Create Library".
So obviously depending on how ye wanna go about it you could move the iTunes library from where it is now to the external drive and "Choose library" or just create a new one on the external drive. Also if in the future iTunes can't find the library (due to the external drive being assigned a different drive letter) you can always just do the same thing and find it with "Choose Library".
Hope that helps you out anyway.
