Just came up the N7 from Naas and the army (maybe was civil defense) are near Kill carrying out speed checks in southbound traffic.
Anybody see this before? Supposing you were speeding, do they have the authority to prosecute you?

No, apparently they're only there to catch their own lads!

Fair play its good to see that they are making sure their drivers are keeping in check.

Although I think we have blown the cover of this TOP SECRET operation :D

That was on Liveline a couple of weeks ago, they are only there to check army vehicles which are subject to lower speed limits tahn the rest of us (50mph in a 60 zone).

He would have had a field day today with the two army jeeps who left me sitting on the M8 with me doing 140kph!!

If they're caught they're punished with driving bans (I think)

An old boss of mine used to be in the Military Police, and he used to have to do these speed checks. They're only after Defence Forces vehicles, so you'll see them around the Curragh a fair bit.

The Greens wouldn't allow that as it would be encouraging deforestation :D

Im well aware of what duties are carried out overseas,i think the op was being a little snide in his remark,at least that is the impression i got (if im mistaken i apologise)

My point was speed checks overseas are the least and most trivial of duties.

I suppose fitting each of their vehicles with gps tracking technology to record the speed and location would be too good of a use of funds.

Army Vehicles are not subject to different speed restrictions on pubic highways than any one else. Same rules apply.

    DSOs say differently!

There are indeed much lower speed limits for DF vehicles. I got in trouble last year for, passing the Director of Transport, doing 110kph in a Nissan. The fact he was in his civi car was,he said, the only thing stopping him from revoking my 154 (driving licence).

I was at the time on a motorway with a 120 kph limit, if I had a trailer on board DF limits would restrict me to 50kph! these limits are currently under review as part of the rewrite of DSO's

The speed limit is very vigorously enforced in the camps in Kosovo by all the bored PA's or their international MP equivalent.

I suppose they have to do something to pass the time...

Lower max speed limit for army vehicles as in Drivers standing orders. Army PAs (Military Police) check for speed of army vehicles only.
