Cee'd/Focus - Dealer prices vs trade-in value

    Hi,

Need to buy a car, and am trying to do the maths on how much I'll lose over, say, 3 years if I buy a new car (BTW am comparing Kia cee'd and Focus 1.6l hatch diesels) vs an older&cheaper equivalent.

Seems like a 3-year old Focus sells for about 12500 now (based on dealer prices on cbg etc). How much do people get from a dealer on that car on trade-in - maybe about 11k?

If that's about right, then if I buy a new Focus now for about 17k (after scrappage), then trade it in for 11k after 3 years I'll lose 17-11 = 6k, so costs me about 2k per year. Am I looking at it all wrong??

    I don't get it
