I have an Iomega Home Network Hard Drive connected to a WiFi router. I had hoped to back up my PC and MacBook to the Hard drive as this drive is supposed to be compatible with both MS and Mac. I can connect to the hard drive over the Wifi from the PC but I can't find the drive with my MacBook, either with or without Time Machine. If I buy a an Airport Extreme will that solve my problem or will I need to buy another hard drive dedicated to the Mac?

    Hi Fluffybums,
Was just about to post a new thread on this subject when I saw yours. The recent upgrade to Airport Extreme firmware and the Airport Utility are supposed to make it possibe to share a USB drive on your airport network. However for your Mac to connect to it, the drive needs to be reformatted in Disc Utility. You have to use the 'GUID' partition scheme, and format the partition in Mac OS extended format. (Haven't tried this myself yet, plan to try this when I get a new ext. drive). The problem that you may face then is, that the p.c. won't recognise the Mac formatted volume. What you may have to do is erase the drive entirely, create 2 partitions via the GUID scheme, one in FAT format for the p.c. and the other in Mac OS Extended for the Mac and that should allow both platforms to share the drive. Oh yes, I nearly forgot, on the subject of 'sharing' you'll also have to turn on 'disk sharing' in the 'Airport Utility' (in the Utilities folder).

Mmm, I'm actually replying to my own post here, but this is the question I was going to post in a new thread before I spotted the O.P. above. I want to go ahead and set up a shared 'Airdisk' as described above and use it as a wireless 'Time Machine' backup for our two Macs. Does anyone know if Time Machine will distinguish between the two machines, and create different 'backup.db' files for each of them, or wil I have to partition the drive and have one for the desktop, and one for the notebook.

    Thanks in advance.

For anyone else interested in setting up this. ( If I'd done the research properly in the first place I needn't have asked the question above). Anyway Time Machine WILL create different backups for each machine without any need to partition. So long as each Macintosh connected has a different computer name, it will create a backup folder unique to that Mac.

I have used that hard drive, if you want to use Time Machine, then just run the iomega home storage manager (on CD that came with it or download from iomega.com),after it is installed now all you have to do is go to select disk in Time Machine prefences and select the Iomega drive.

To open one of the shared folders on the drive just use Finder>Go>Connect to Server>smb://192.168.1.xxx/backup
Obviously put in IP address of iomega network drive and the name of the folder you want.
