Do USB DVB-T tuners work in Ireland?

I have a Revo aspire R3600 running Ubuntu. I see mentions of USB DTV sticks on various forums. Do they work here? What can they pick up? FTA? Freesat (If connected to dish?) RTE digital? Just wondering if they are worth i and if anyone had a recommendation. Currently I'm just using my system to stream audio/video etc.

    Thanks for your time folks.

DVB-T sticks will work In Ireland to receive the current RTE digital test transmissions, the full is due to launch to 80-90% of the county in October (I can't remember the correct % figure).

You'll need a h264 decoder to view the video and an aerial to receive the signal. The supplied dvb antenna may or may not work depending on signal strength in your area.

To pick up free to air sat channels you'll need a DVB-S or DVB-S2 tuner and a dish. I'd recommend a DVB-S2 tuner over DVB-S as BBC-HD and ITV1-HD are rumoured to be moving to a DVB-S2 signal.

You'll need to check with the supplier for linux drivers. If you decide to switch to windows you should make sure the device has BDA drivers. Personally I use XP and Mediaportal I get a full 7 day EPG (program guide) on RTE digital and Freesat/Sky channels. I'm told windows 7 does the same, DVBviewer is also excellent.

The RTE digital test channels currently are RTE1 & 2, TG4, RTE news now and there is 2 test card channels one of which is HD the other was TV3. There are 10 radio channels too.

Thanks for the info jobyrne. I'm based in Dublin so I'll look into it. I have a freesat box (Or FTA, I can't remember which is which. The one with only the "now and next" epg). Was just thinking about connecting to the revo instead if there were advantages (Extra channels, better EPG, PVR functionality etc).

    Will look into it.

You should consider getting both a DVB-T and DVB-S/S2 tuner, usb version of the dvb-s tuners are availible too. The main advantage is better epg if the correct software is used and the ability to record tv, also my HTPC had replaced my DVD/blu ray player, Hard drive media player, satillete reciever etc so there is less clutter.

Assuming you've got enough cable feeds from you dish and enough usb ports you could get two dvb-s usb tuners and watch on one while recording on the other.
