right, so you have a htc desire and you think it's the most exciting and brilliant piece of kit you've ever had. it's not perfect though, right?

so what's annoying you? i've not got one but i'm considering it and some of the things i've noticed so far are:

    - slingbox doesn't work with it (at all)
    - you can't access paid apps (easily)
    - touch screen very different than phones like the n95 8gb (and maybe you'll never perfect texting on it but you'll just accept that?)

anything else? even the smallest, stupidest things !

The fact that my missus has it and won't give it to me till my birthday.......

Not long to go now though;)

    couple of other things too:

    - the memory card isn't hot swappable (can't be changed)
    - the flash on it's only led flash (can't be changed)
    - there's only a small amount of onboard memory (can't be changed, may cause issues with apps?)

What gets me is the small things that could have been fixed if even a little attention was paid:

    - even if you switch off haptic feedback, it still works on the Dialpad - but only when you dial; if you bring the dialpad up during a call (e.g. to enter info for automated systems) it doesn't work again
    - the speakerphone sound quality is indescribably horrible, I barely understand the caller, I can't comprehend how HTC's QA let this through. Music playback isn't much better either. Coming from an N95 8GB it's a major letdown for me. I'm actually looking into ways to replace the speaker
    - there is no 'refresh' option in the music player menu, if you copy new songs to the sd card the only way to get them recognised is to restart the phone
    - the way the stupid phone SCREAMS that fookin jingle at you when you turn it on, then goes on to display 'quietly brilliant' and it can't be turned off either, which is fun when you restart at 1am with the family sleeping around you
    - enabling silent mode doesn't affect apps, only the notifications, so expect surprises when you try out a new game at nighttime, see above

Despite all these it's the best piece of technology I've ever owned. :D

    1) Isn't Slingbox coming to Android? http://www.slingbox.com/go/android Or am I mis-understanding you?
    2) I found it incredibly easy to root, but I know what you mean.
    3) I believe the Desire and Legend are pretty much the best touchscreen's around - based on reviews I've read anyway. As for texting - use Swype. I can't get over how good it is.

The only thing that annoys me is apps not killing themselves when you exit them, but that's an issue across the board, and it only takes a second to kill them off myself with advanced task killer.

    Speaker.
Portrait editing using dhspewriter if you have to edit a word then sometimes you cannot select the correct place.
The track ball replacement - not very good

    Poor camera
Terrible headphones that have the remote hard-wired in
Don't like the unlock button placement.
    I'm out of internal memory

Software might help with two of those.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,977 ✭✭✭johnny_adidas

as above the speaker and that ironic quietly brilliant startup noise
that rattle of the camera or or vibration device or whatever it is
alarm not working when phone is off
    phone not accepting vcards

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Is there anyway to cancel alarms when in Snooze mode? This is probably the thing that annoys me the most on a day to day basis.

And also, trying to suspend the alarm if I actually decide to get up early for once.

Yeah the speaker is muck, ringtones sound terrible. The thing that annoys me most is how difficult it is to see the screen when out in sunlight (probably true for most screens though and not Desire specific problem).

Still a great phone though, just not perfect :)

I'm only starting out with mine. Enjoying the experience! Nothing too out of the ordinary yet.

There is a good list of quirks here.

Don't have a Desire yet, but planning on getting one soon. Surprised to see a comment on the touch screen, I thought it was meant to be excellent? Especially the comment comparing it to the N95... I've used an N97 and thought the touch screen was poor (resistive). The resistive touch screen on the Touch Pro 2 is a lot better, but both are obviously far surpassed by the capacitive touch screens on both the iPhone and the HD2. Does the Desire not have the same capacitive screen as the HD2?
Also, is there any Desire replacement in the pipeline?

Both true. If you increase the brightness of the screen it can help a little bit in sunlight but it's still hard to see. And the speakerphone is woeful, the voices are all saturated and muffled.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,495 ✭✭✭Abelloid

I have my screen brightness set to auto and never have a problem in sunlight.

Battery life at lower levels are a joke it went from 14% to 10% to 5% to shutting down each time I powered in to check the battery life. All in the space of 20 mins with wifi off and screen brightness at its lowest.

Not for me. I copy new songs on and as soon as I plug out the USB cable they're in my library.

I'll have to check that out, so far I've used WiFi to transfer from my home ftp server.

So far have found the battery life to be quite poor. Only lasted 12 hours yesterday and it was just on standby for the vast majority of that. An hour or two of browsing with the wifi on seems to really destroy the battery. I wouldn't make or receive many voice calls so I shudder to think how long it would last if you did.

Don't like the way it handles contacts when you link different accounts together. When I hit phone it brings up a load of contacts I'll never actually ring as they are people on my Facebook who put their phone numbers up on their Facebook account. To get around this I just use the people app instead of hitting phone though, easy enough.

Also phone numbers from Facebook accounts were overwriting ones I had put down for contacts originally. I have all my numbers set up starting with +353 so I don't have any hassle calling people when I'm abroad. People would enter their number on Facebook without the +353 and then that would be their default number. Got around that depending on the order of how you link the accounts together, but still would just prefer to have one contact with all phone numbers, email addresses, and then a link to their facebook account but without actually pulling any contact info from it.

Not many apps have jumped out at me on the marketplace, and a lot of the paid ones seem overpriced (ok more of a general android issue).

Would love the option to delete most of the preinstalled apps. I'm never going to use them and they're just cluttering up the apps menu.

Can you delete the preinstalled apps if you root it?

No, even if you have root they're part of the ROM. AFAIK the only way of getting rid of them is to flash a ROM that doesn't contain them in the first place.

thanks very much for the comments lads. taking them all on board here in trying to decide whether to purchase one or not. also looking at various reviews etc.

What annoys me is that everyone doesn't have one, they keep wanting to play with mine!

Regarding the touchscreen and battery, I think the touchscreen is one of the best out there atm, and I get 50 hours out of the battery, and I use it quite a bit everyday....

What do you base that on? I've always thought the iPhone touchscreen was a good deal better. Better multi-touch capabilities, whereas Desire supports two points max and sometimes messes up when X crosses Y.

    50!? I don't believe you :)

I get about a day and I don't mind that.

I worked in a company testing phones for 2 years and use a lot of touchscreens, so I know my way around a good/bad one. My girlfriend has a 3GS and personally I think the desire is better, just by a tiny bit tho :D

I'll try break down my usage:

    Brightness automatic
    Don't use live wallpapers
    I use advance task killer
I use the wifi for about 4-5 hours a day and maybe 1 hour with mobile network.
Send 10-20 txts a day and maybe 15mins on voice calls

Dunno what else to tell yah........

The FM radio is absolute pants! It's bloody rubbish when you're out and about walking...terrible reception on it, anytime you swipe on the screen in another app the interference fúcks up the reception

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,992 ✭✭✭✭partyatmygaff

It's not that difficult to get over two days of battery life out of the Desire. I use mine on maximum brightness and with light usage I manage *almost* two days out of it.

To do that I just use setcpu to underclock the CPU and overclock it as needed. The newer kernels and radios improve battery life by a lot as well.

How does one do this? Does it involve rooting the phone?

It does, after that all you need to do is download and install setcpu and configure it as you like.

Ya, the desire was the last HTC phone to use that particular - sometimes erratic - digitizer, the Incredible onwards sport much improved ones.

That makes sense as it scans the sd card for music when you turn off usb mode. A way around it so that you can still transfer music via ftp and not have to restart your phone would be to unmount and remount the sd card in the settings menu. I would be very surprised if it didn't rescan the sd card after that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 280 ✭✭BeciMester

I can unmount all right, but don't have an option to remount. Guess I'll have to stick to usb then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,178 ✭✭✭killbillvol2

Battery life is the number 1 pain for me. There's no way I'd get two days from it but then again I actually use it for phone calls.

For the startup spound just delete the sound file - it's in system/media. You can also delete the animation if it really bothers you I think. It's in the same place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 280 ✭✭BeciMester

Can't delete the file, my unit is not rooted. Guess it's time to change that, more so that froyo is not coming for a good while. Roll on the weekend then. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,763 ✭✭✭✭Inquitus

I would concur 24 hours without a charge is the limit for me, but I have no issues as long as I either charge it overnight or if i forget then during the day at work. It has better battery life than my wifes 3GS, but then thats not saying much.

Rockplayer plays both perfectly, though no mobile can play 720p mkvs so you'll have to shoot for a res more inline with the phones screen.

720P files encoded in H.264 play very well on the Desire though. But why anyone would play a 720P file on a screen that's far below HD resolution is beyond me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 225 ✭✭bluefirefly

Turn your phone into silent before you switch it off. So when you switch it on. It doesn't "scream" at ya

unlocking bit annoys me abit. had to press the power button first..

    and froyo not here yet.......:(

Download an App called SDrescan, this scans your SD card for new music and updates your library, I do it after copying music over the air

I know it sounds bat**** :pac: but it does actually work. The water is wicked away by the rice and dries out the phone. Imperative that you keep the battery out though or it might short out the phone.

On XDA I helped a guy fix his Desire that he dropped in to a glass of tia maria. Died instantly the moment it hit the tia maria. After rinsing it with water and drying it out with the rice for 36 hours he managed to get it back working as it did before. But the Tia Maria had also damaged his optical trackpad and buttons so I told him to disassemble the phone and to soak it contact cleaner (Isopropyl alcohol) and after that its worked perfectly for him.

Compared to that a bit of water is nothing ;)

Just do not turn on the phone until after 36 hours or so.
