Hi,I wonder can any boardsies shed some light on Harbour Police in Ireland. Dublin Port and Dun Laoighre have very little info on there websites, and I don't know if any other ports have them. It's for a work project, any info would help. I'll be phoning tomorrow,so if anyone else is curious I'll post whatever I find out tomorrow.

I don't think they are real police as I don't think that any of them have ever set foot in Templemore.

The term "Harbour Authorities" would be more appropriate. :p

They're in the same mould as the Airport Police. They have powers under the maritime act within the borders of the port/harbour. (e.g. In Dun Laoghaire, between the east and west pier)

Cheeky cheeky, not real police indeed! I think there's 18 of them in total so you're probably safe enough tho. Alpha Papa had a thread about them where someone posted a link to the statute which gives them there "power". I'll post whatever if anything the Harbour Office has to say about them.

There's also Customs who have certain powers wrt harbours which might be pertinent to your project. E.g. they have a facility in Howth which is not permanently manned and have powers of search and iirc arrest.

Thanks Tricky, yet more to google,if only out of curiosity. I couldn't contact the Harbour today, and the info we needed has trickled it's way to us. Not very exciting stuff either. And nice one Gabhain, your link was helpful.

Dublin Port Company did away with the Harbour Police a few years back.

DPC made all of the Harbour Police redundant and took on a private security company called Federal Security Group.

Dun Laoghaire port still have a handful of Harbour Police.
But I can see the same thing happening as what happened in Dublin Port

I would agree with a previous poster that they have a power of arrest only but no power to bring an offender before the courts. ie Offender has to be handed over to GARDA for charge, prosecution before the courts.

They do not have investigative powers like GARDA.

Dublin Port have three Police officers, the minimum they need for some archaic (spelling?) reason and Dun Laoighre have 14 who are over seen by their own Superindentant.
