Sell privately or trade-in? And for how much?

    Hi all,

I bought a 1999 Hyundai Coupe 1.6l petrol in 2005 for about €8,000 and it's time for a change. It had 86,000 on the clock when I bought it and as I don't drive that much I've only got it up to 111,000 after 5 years.

I bought it without its full service history (silly me, eh?) and so all I have is its history since I bought it; turns out I was the 5th owner (or maybe even 6th!) and I needed to spend almost €1,000 in the year after I bought it to fix everything; it's been relatively pain-free since then though. It's in decent shape (there is a hole somewhere in the exhaust though), the paintwork is poor / flaking on the spoiler but fine everywhere else, clean, NCT'ed till next January and I've looked after it well.

How much do you think it is worth?

I want to spend €7,500 (including the value of my current car!) or so on a seven or eight year old saloon (maybe a BMW 316-type), so am wondering whether I will get any joy from dealers trying to trade in my Hyundai or should I just grit my teeth and sell privately via Carzone before looking for a new vehicle? Any thoughts you may have would be welcome! :)

Youll always get more for a car selling it privately as dealers will give you the bear minimum. Of course, its a lot more hassle to sell privately. When it comes to a car of that age and value (youre probably looking at €1500-€2000, tops if even that) Id always at least try sell it privately first, as I cant see a dealer giving you a whole lot for it.

selling privately isnt all that easy!

Im trying to get rid of two cars currently to put as part payment of trading up to something like a jag. Theres very few offers, adverts and donedeal seem the way to go! Carzone is a bit of a rip off imo

selling privately can take weeks, most cheap stuff will sell though so well worth it, donedeal.ie is the best i reckon, adverts will have loads of wasters asking if you want a swap.

An 11 year old Hyundai Coupe with 111k miles is not going to be worth much to a dealer to be honest. Considering the going rate for one they would have to buy it very cheap in order to clean it, service it, give some sort of warranty with it and try to make a few quid profit on the deal.

Unless you really just want rid of it I would try and sell it privately though that has it's drawbacks too.

You'll probably get as much off on a straight deal then you would get for a trade in with the Hyundai. Buy straight, sell the Coupe privately and leave it at that.

I'd be asking €1,250 to take a grand for yours if I was to sell it privately. And fix the exhaust before you even attempt to sell it, a small thing like that will make a massive difference to it's saleability.
