Hey guys I need to tighten my bottom bracket on my old Trek 1000 in time for the Ring of Kerry this weekend.

All of the bike shops in Limerick are not taking bikes for repair, (seems a regular thing). Havent tried halfords though

Does anyone in Limerick have to tools to do this and could help me out? I believe it doesn't take too long?

What do you mean by tighten? Is there play in the BB spindle? The trek 1000 has a sealed cartridge square taper BB which means you would have to replace it to get rid of any play in the crankset.

I have play in my BB too on my Trek 1000. So I am assuming that I have to replace it. I have only done about 15,000k. Is this about right?

Depends on what conditions is what cycled in. A hard winter will do a a good job on BB's due to the salt.

Possibly, a sealed cartridge bb (make sure you get the correct size, check the manufacture's website) is very cheap and quite easy to replace. Have a look at some videos, thats how I learnt. You only need two tools (a crank removal tool & a BB tool) along with an your allen keys, some will say use a torque wrench, but I've never had any issues without one on a square taper bb. Should take you no more than an hour your first time.

The sealed BBs they put in are very poor quality its a matter of when and not if they will wear out,get your self a shimano UN 54 BB and put it in,its very easy only one tool and an adjustable spanner is needed. Oops forgot about crank removal tool, silly ol me,could just use a hammer though, haha.
