There was a video I saw a link for on boards of all the things cgi'd in tv shows. It showed clips of Ugly Betty and Grey's anatomy if I remember correctly?

Does anyone know the video I'm talking about?.. if so link pls :)

Speaking of which....which studio produces the best looking CGI?, i see alot of great quality stuff coming from New Zealand the last few years, Stargate Digital are also rather good.

I never realised the extent of it until I watched that clip.

Is nothing real any more? :D

We discussed this on the old thread, but it is shocking the level of CGI used.

Maybe I'm too much of a nerd, but all those shots look blatently computer generated, and the worse for it tbh. I remember noting them whilst watching that particular season of 24, found it jarring. The daylight composite shots in particular are a bit naff.

Best CGI in TV shows? Ah you just can't better the FX of Babylon 5 - you gotta love Amigas ;)

Green screen is not CGI, its optical effects (aka Compositing). Sure some of the backgrounds are CGI but usually its exisiting footage or stills thats used.

But doesn't CGI mean computer generated imagery, so the fact that computers were used to generate the composites means it's still classifiable as CGI? I think it's also an umbrella term that just refers to anything that's been modified with computers, isn't it?

    Pretty much.

Used like that its so broad a term as to be meaningless really. The clip that amacachi posted is about 90% Chroma Key/composite rather than what most people think of as CGI i.e. less than convincing exploding spaceships, tidal waves hitting New york etc. (I flicked on the Day After Tomorrow a couple of evenings ago just in time for the big wave and boy its aged badly!)

The CGI in 24 didn't look too bad in that video. The CGI in LOST is pretty bad sometimes. I also find the CGI in 'V' to be pretty cringe worthy, especially when they are walking around the ship.

^ aye....it looks very false, they don't matchmove the scenes properly, the matte painting in the background seems to move independent of the actors.....pretty bad really, for a Sci=Fi show.

Did anyone else notice that some of the wide shots in the Pacific you could clearly see where the bottom of the green screen was?

A few times I thought it was quite glaring.

New HD-shot opening sequence to Coronation St features CGI.

The tram/train in the background was added in post.

sanctuary on the syfy channel is all shot in green screen, first show to do so fully, but with the massive increase in green screen more and more of the cgi is lookin worse, "V" has terrible cgi "Lost" where the sub is going under water in season 3 or 4 looked awefull,

i dont mind the cgi in sanctuary, as its such a large scale and without it the show wont work, wheras a show like 24 with a hugh budget youd wonder why they use it so much, not that i thought it was bad,

Noticed in the Pacific - and maybe only noticeable because I watched it in HD - that there was some pretty glaringly obvious (and thus fairly poor) CGI used for many of the dismemberment/shrapnel and artillery wounds.
