Hi, I'm hoping people will have some advice on things to do in Joburg especially if anyone has been over for the world cup.

My OH is from Joburg and his cousing is getting married next January. We've just booked flights to get their Christmas Eve and leave in the middle of January. The wedding is over two weekends and my OH has a lot of catching up to do with his family so we're fairly tied to Joburg. We're going to go to Capetown for New Year's and on safari for a few days but apart from that we'll be in Joburg.

I'm looking for anything interesting to do in the general area? We'll have a car and don't mind driving a good bit (which I believe we'll be doing anyway)

My Oh has a few suggestions but I'd love to hear from any boardies who have been.

Also, does anyone have any good suggestions for places to stay for safari? I think my OH said we'd need to drive 2 - 3 hours north of Joburg at least.

I don't know Joburg well at all unfortunately, I've only been on business, but if you need any help for Cape Town I would be happy to help. I believe the Cradle of Humankind, the Apartheid Museum and Soweto tours are all worth doing.

On the safari, the closest to Joburg would be Pilanesberg, near Sun City, which is about a 2 hour drive from northern Joburg. Kruger is a 5-6 hour drive, though you can also fly there. If you want to use the national park accommodation in Kruger you would need to book very soon as it is peak time.
