Great to hear him referring to:

    1) Having to get one over on the French lad who came 2nd because of what happened with the Ireland V France world cup game

    2) Becoming the 3rd Irishman to win a major (after the others were just talking about Fred Daly and not mentioning Harrington)

    3) It being great for Irish golf

    Debate settled perhaps

What a top man, leveled, comes across as down to earth and knows where he came from and is appreciative of those who helped him along his journey. Top class

Does all that stuff really matter?? He seems like a genuine bloke who is respectful of people from all backgrounds- it's a tremendous personal acheivement - why not just leave it at that.

Because nobody follows sport really to take pleasure in watching a great "personal achievement". People follow teams/ sportspeople that they have an association with (most often somebody from the same country as you). Seeing somebody win from your country tends to fill one with pride. The Swiss dont see Federer's wins as a "personal achievement", nor do they Jamaicans hail Usain Bolt's Olympic Gold medals as just a personal achievement. Its just the nature of sport. People take pride in seeing their countrymen do well and that wont change, hence why this debate will probably never end.

He reffered to derry as derry and not londoonderry, is he a nationalist or neither? His manager is a dub, anyone know this conor rodge fella?

Fair play to him, he came across as a very humble, genuine, down-to-earth fella. Was great to see him taking the pi$$ out of his dad and just chillin out in his clubhouse with some local kids, seemed to have some time and a word for everybody.

Really enjoyed it, just a normal bloke with lots of talent. Conor Ridge looks like a man who wouldn't dodge a party!

Enjoyed it, particularly the bit in the clubhouse with rory. Not sure was it him or someone else who was putting on an american accent going "So what does it feel like to have won your national open graham?"

Very down to earth guy and nice to get an insight into the madness following something as big as that win.

Total rubbish. Why would you support someone simply because he is Irish??? harrington never appealed to me, in fact the guy wrecks my head. I backed Sergio in British Open when Harrington won first time, eventhough I laid him off well I still would have like to see El Nino win it. People get blinded by this green mist. Don't get me wrong Harrington done great to win 3 majors, fair play to him.

G Mac played unreal golf and appears to a decent bloke. He knows he is from the North, UK... but like Clarke also views himself as Irish eventhough they don't vote for SF or SDLP! Like napoleoninrags said "does it really matter" where someone is from if you respect them as sports person and want them to do well???

Who you support or not is your business but don't knock people for being patriotic. I always keep an eye out for the Irish competitors in any sport I come across, even sports I don't like.

Obviously you're not that patriotic to Ireland or maybe you're not Irish.

Facts: I am Irish, born and raised. Support Irish teams regularly. Proud to be Irish and would consider myself a republican.

    Good for you.

I for one was very happy to hear G Mac referring to himself several times as Irish eg. The conversation with the French fella and the third Irish person the win a major. If he had referred to himself as being British I wouldn't look at him any differently than the likes of Lee Westwood, I'd still be pleased for him but not proud.

I think it's fair to say that McDowell doesn't consider himself one thing over the other in too hard and fast a manner.

That will no doubt annoy some of you and not fit with agendas, but there you go. McDowell himself seems to consider himself Irish, Northern Irish and British. Similarly, i think he'd be happy that others/fans would are entitled to think of him as 'their own' too.

Just as he referred to himself as the third Irish winner, he referred to David Cameron as 'the Prime Minister'.

If it doesn't matter to him, i don't see why it should matter to any of us. There's no right or wrong here.

Hugely enjoyable programme by the way. Very easy to watch! Loved it when his had got the napkin out and started giving the trophy a wipe.

Thought it was very funny when his caddie explained what the small writing on hte flag was ... Great programme - down to earth guy .. delighted for him ..

Had'nt realised it but this guy has a touch of class...he asked his parents to retire after he won the Scottish Open in 08 & his father to tour the world with him. I think his mother is ill & recuperating in Spain but I found it just a touch odd that he made no reference to her in the programme.
Still it was both entertaining & insightful...I thought his interaction with the Junior golfers of Rathmore was simply fantastic...rock on G-Mac!

If thats a case then you are a disgrace for shouting for Garcia, a Spaniard, over Padraig Harrington, your fellow countryman, part of the nation you say you are "proud" to be from!

Lads, there is a politics forum here if anyone wants to use it. This one is meant to be about golf.
