Yeah, it depends on how many channels its using and what the bandwidth of the local cable is and how far you are from the fibre.

UPC should be able to do this in newly cabled / recabled areas too, although I can't see why they would as nobody else is offering anything even remotely competitive cable internet yet.

Yeah, I thought the max was something like 150mbps. Not sure if that were once the case or if I made it up.

Well, we are apparently getting 100 / 120mbps this summer, that's still a good bit ahead of the rest (bar FTTH exclusive developments).

EuroDOCSIS 3 is 55 MBit/s per channel and DOCSIS 3 specifies a minimum of 4 bonded channels giving you over 200 MBit/s

However DOCSIS 3 doesn't specify any maximum number of bonded channels to use, it all comes down to the capabilities of the gear. The initial CPE's (modems) only supported 4 channels, but newer ones support 8 channels (over 400 MBit/s) and in future we will see ever higher number of channels being used.

It is even possible that some day we might see all channels being used for bandwidth, giving a theoretical capacity of 5 to 7 GBit/s !!! [1]

This is why cable is far more future proof then DSL and only slightly less capable then pure fibre to the home (but a lot cheaper).

[1] You would need to switch to a pure IPTV / VOD system to allow this. A hybrid broadcast TV / IPTV system makes more sense from an efficiency perspective, while still offering very high speeds, at least in the meantime.
