Bringing walking frame on flight

I'm flying abroad next week to visit a relative whose health has recently deteriorated, and am bringing them a foldable metal walking frame we have.

I presume if it was for my own use I'd be allowed bring it as hand baggage, at least as far as the gate before handing it over. Not sure what the story is in my case, but I'm guessing I'll have to check it?

Any advice on packaging it - is there any point or should I just tie it in a folded position and hope for the best?

Might sound crazy, but could you not just use it? If you need it then you have to be allowed.

Maybe just ring the airline though.
