M50 Toll for tourists in rental cars

    Hello all,

I have a whole gang of German tourists visiting next week.

They will be renting 2 cars, and will go thru the M50 toll at least twice.

Can it be arranged that the rental company pays the toll and adds it to the bill, or must they cal lthe number and pay with a German credit card?

    TIA
    P.

There should be no problem paying with a German credit card as long as it's definitely a credit card and not some kind of national debit card like (the German equivalent to) Switch or Laser.

I've heard of rental companies paying the toll and charging an admin fee on top of the toll, not sure if it's true but I'd avoid it just in case.

AFAIK, all of the rental companies do as the previous poster advises, i.e. charges the toll (+ "admin" cost) to the rental. I rented from Thrifty last month while car was being serviced and this was the way it was handled.

Not trying to hijack this but does anyone know is it possible to prepay for the toll as there are some UK lads coming over next week and they wish to pay before they use it instead of having the worry about finding somewhere to pay on their travels to deepest darkest Cavan :D

I don't think you can. They can pay by credit card over the phone or get a list of Payzone outlets in Cavan on the front page of www.payzone.ie.

If you're talking about the M50 then yes, you can prepay.

You can walk into any garage/shop which sells the M50 tags and give your mates UK registration numbers, doesn't have to be your own.
I don't bother with an M50 toll bridge account and just pay as I use it.
But you can pay in advance.
Once the registration numbers match up, the toll bridge guys don't care.

Just make sure to keep your receipt, eFlow has been known to make mistakes in the past. (massive understatement!)

    From eflow.ie ...
How do you manage foreign vehicles?

Foreign-registered vehicles using the M50 are subject to the same rules as Irish-registered vehicles.
For all motorists using the M50, whether registered or unregistered, national or foreign, the non-payment of tolls is an offence under the legislation. The National Roads Authority has therefore established a rigorous enforcement policy implemented through a trans-European enforcement agency to assist in the recovery of unpaid toll charges and fines and the prosecution of all toll evaders of Irish or foreign registered vehicles.
The onus is also on foreign motorists arriving in any country to be aware of bye-laws and rules of the road. Information is also available through motoring organisations, car hire companies and tourist bodies here and abroad.

So how come drivers from the north/overseas don't get endless letters requesting payment.

Eflow can't manage the republic cars nevermind other countries, they haven't established any policies at all.

    It is a flawed system.

How do you know they don't? In any case, the question of whether they have to pay and whether eflow can be bothered chasing them up are two different things altogether.

    Ask 'Stelthyspeeder' about his experience.

There is nothing to say that they will not catch up with you one day - I would not chance it.
