    what do you think ?

Possibility Ray Dempsey, did well with the minors, has the experience of playing in an all Ireland.

I think someone should be appointed relatively soon, give them lots of time to sort things out between now and the start of the league.

This is not the time for some sort of 'big' name manager like Miko.

Id like to see someone outside of Mayo get it. It would introduce a bit of freshness to the setup. Some of the names mentioned above have been tried and tested IMO.

The biggest problem for Mayo is they need a Manager ASAP while the Club Championship is on. The Mayo County Board should hire an INDEPENDANT Recruitment Company to get them a Manager. That company can come up with a job spec and ensure that any candidate meets that spec. No more stroking for these positions or one lad on the board saying I think Joe Bloggs should get the job. They can use companies such as Sports Tracker to help them out. Cavan did this a few years ago.

I think you need to go outside Mayo at this stage and the Senior Manager would also need to manage the U21s.

    No Senior Football Manager
    No Ladies Football Manager
    No Hurling Manager

Your County Convention is probably on in November. You need to clear out your County Board. Start working now.

I am passionate about Galway but I want to see the Mayo I saw beating the Dubs in 2006 again.

Does any prospective manager want the poisoned chalice that is the Mayo senior football team?

It is akin to wanting to become manager of the English soccer team. I don't think any top class coach or manager would go near Mayo until their attitudes and coaching structures change drastically.

Personally, I don't think the raw material exists in Mayo to produce an All Ireland winning team at senior level. People might not agree with me and highlight the recent Mayo minor and u21 teams. However, like many other counties underage success does not guarantee success at senior level. For example Galway Minor hurling teams, Galway's football minor and two u21 All-Ireland successes in the last decade. The great Laois minor football teams of the late 90s or the Limerick u21 hurling team who won 3 All-Irelands in a row from 2000 to 2002.

Great interview here by Alan Dillon that is well worth a read for any Mayo fan. He says among other things that we started playing as individuals when we got out of our comfort zone in the last three games and that no analysis took place of weaknesses that were emerging during our league run.
If we could win 6 out of 7 league games while playing in the comfort zone then surely there is enough talent to work with for any new man coming in.

Rumours flying about that Tommy Lyons could make a return to his native county.

    Quick shortlist:

John Maughan - Two stints were enough I would say, team is weaker now than what he had in 1996/1997 and 2004.

Liam McHale - Has expressed interest and would be considered a front-runner IMO.

Noel Connelly - Has had great success with the U-21s and was a great player in his day. Also considered a front-runner.

Pat Holmes - The only Mayo senior manager to bring in a national title in the last god knows how long but hasn't expressed interest as far as I know.

Ray Dempsey - Has done very well with the minors in the last two years, would certainly be an interesting choice.

Tommy Lyons - Did well with Offaly and has worked as Mayo selector before. Hasn't expressed interest yet as far as I know.

Mick O'Dwyer - Looks like he'll be staying on as inter-county manager for the time being, be it with Wicklow or another team.

Paidi O'Shea - Has expressed an interest in managing Mayo before, no indicators this time around.

While certainly there are capable candidates available from within Mayo, bar John Maughan and Tommy Lyons there isn't a huge amount of experience amongst the natives. I would like to see an experienced manager from outside the county with proven success (O'Dwyer and O'Shea come to mind) take the reigns and give the county a serious boost in attitude and teamwork. As David Brady and Alan Dillon have pointed out in recent weeks in the media the talent is certainly there in Mayo but the team need a serious overhaul. Also the new manager needs to scout the county better than O'Mahoney did, there are better players available than what was on the panel this year.

Mayo are back to the position they occupied in 1996 and 2004, percieved no-hopers who aren't on anyone's radar for AI contention. Time to take inventory and rebuild!

There are 2 of them - the ex-Dublin manager and the Ballina one. Personally I wouldnt let Paidi O'Shea next, nigh or near the Mayo job, not after his exploits:D:D in Clare !!!

Maybe Mick O'Dwyer is the man for the job. Mayo have great players but are mentally frail and always collapse on the big stage. Mick's motivational and man management skills are exactly what they need.

You have it in one there for sure. The talent is there, the mentalitly isn't. BUT in saying that people said that too about JOM and his exploits with Galway would rub off on the Mayo players.

Who ever it is they need to rid the "Pre-Madonna" attitude of the some of the players in the squad, big heads and egos are ruining some of the players, some of them need to be hammered back to earth with a bang.

Has to be Connelly, how anyone would consider either of the Kerry pensioners are stupid. Mc Hale, no thanks! Dempsey conspired to throw away 2 all ireland minor titles, and doesn't even pick the best players available to play for the u-21's now. idiot!

Why have mayo players a problem with what happened before Madonna. I think you might mean "prima donna"

Ballina and Clare i think...could be wrong about ballina.

I would kinda like Micko to get it. I know that he is pure old school but he is someone that the players would listen to and somebody to give them belief.

And belief is the main thing that Mayo lack.

Take out the check book and get him in for 2 years. At the end of them 2 years you have a panel that is still very young but instilled in them would be a belief that they are as good as anybody.

What is it about Brian Cody?He was a top quality hurler and now as a coach, has few equals.I am sure he would be a success regardless which sport he was involved in.One reads of all those teams in other sports where all thats needed is a good manager.I am so sure of his skills that he could carry out i miracle.Yes,I firmly believe Brian Cody could and would bring Sam Maguire to mayo.

Its not going to be Micko. From what I hear he has been talking to 2 counties about taking over but has now decided and neither is Mayo. Can't say anymore for now but word should be out in about 2 weeks or so. The county involved still has a manager in place so he needs to be pushed before he comes in.

Someone with no ties to politics is the answer to it and someone with a pair of balls that will stand up to these egos in the camp

Egos gotta go.. I find it very strange how many Mayo players that are up their own hole.. particularly since Mayo people are as sound as you'll meet!

I reckon that if Paudie or Micko would take the job they would be the best lads for it.. Mayo have a mental block when it comes to big games and in particular Kerry.. Mayo players might not like Kerry but i'll bet they respect them.. I think the only way you'll overcome this mental block is to have someone from the otherside show give them the belief that they can achieve it if they play cool'ly, unselfishly and as a team unit..

Best of luck from a Kerryman who would like to see ye mind Sam for us for a year!

Joe Kernan will be the next Mayo manager! In one season he has caused the Galway team to regress by at least 5 years maybe he could do the same in Mayo!!!!!!

dont know who in a sain mind would take the job. tis a poisoned chalice of a job.

the way moran was treated was a disgrace, its a bit like newcastle and kevin keegan, only mahony will do, and now that hes gone, anybody else will have a huge problem after the damage done.

Martin Sludden? He'll probably be in need of a Job, and has experience of getting teams in Green wins in Croke Park.
