    Hi,

The radio in my car is the standard but has problems with signal strength. When it does catch a signal, rarely, it is only for a short period. Where in Dublin can this be fixed? Tried Halfords but they said because they didnt sell it, they wont look at it.

    Thanks

Do you have an automatic aerial that raises/lowers when the radio is turned on?

That would at least confirm that the aerial is connected.

What make and model of car, and year?
Try looking for a local in car entertainment specialist ,They should be better able to help you, or a main dealer.

    Its a permanent aerial.

Car is an Audi s3, 2001. I have heard that this tends to happen to these.

Thats the problem, not many in car entertainment people around that i know of!

Might be just as cheap, if not cheaper to replace the stock unit with a second hand sony head unit. Should be straight forward with a '01 A3.

try fitting an amp, had the same problem with mine when i bought a new head unit and had very bad reception. turns out the stock head unit has an inbuilt amp for the power antenia but this worked fine for me - http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SearchCmd?catalogId=10151&storeId=10001&categoryId=165626&langId=-1&action=listrefine&constraints=sor||Price||1||rpp||36||pag||4&mode=grid

theres two types of fittings, iso and din. check which one you have first before buying it.

This may sound anal, but i like the way the current radio fits in with the rest of the car. I think changing this will ruin the look.

Are amps hard to fit? i have pulled the radio out before and had a look, but nver actually tried any DIY on it..

no its easy, you just take out the radio, disconnect the aerial cable and plug it in the amp, then plug the amp back into the aerial slot on the back of the radio. It doesnt require any dissembling of the radio and no power source.

Just to cover all areas but you have checked the current aerial hasnt came loose and popped out right?

I think i will buy the keys to get it out later and then have a good look..

How can i check what type of connection it is?

best thing to do is take a picture of it and bring it with you into halfords or wherever you buy it and match like for like
