Does anyone know anything about this new venue in Smithfield called Space 54 ? I've passed a few times and there's been bands playing in the main room and full of people, and it looks pretty cool inside, just wondering has anyone played there/been there? I see its available for rehearsal aswell so wondering has anyone any experience cos i'm looking for a rehearsal space.

It would be great if smithfield/stoneybatter musicians have a new home for jamming and putting on gigs! and Smithfield square badly needs something like this, i'm sick of looking at all the empty retail units with thousands of square metres of unused space

It's a venue as far as I know, Zealots played there recently, missed it unfortunately. No Bar, bring your own booze, few euro in.
There's a few places like that up around smithfield and stoneybatter. There's another opening up at the end of the month too. Do'nt know the details just heard it on the grapevine the other day.

I'd imagine the best thing to do would be contact them and ask.... just a guess though. :p

Am talking to the organizer i think and he just wont answer my questions he just keeps asking me the name of the night and what bands all i want to know is what is the size of the venue how many does it hold and do i need to bring my own pa gear, at this stage its rather ridiclious i've now asked him three times.

I don't mean any slanter or banter here mods, but this is the most unprofessional venue i have ever worked with he will not tell me how much it is to rent the venue capacity or if there is a pa or sound engineer in the venue he just keeps asking me what kind of event i'm running, and i've told him, twice!!

The Irish Ableton Usergroup holds their, er, 'meetings' there. I say 'meetings', 'cause I've never been. As far as I know they all meet up, talk about Ableton stuff, play a bit of a gig and have a bit of a party. Don't know how much of a gig it is. I should really go next time. As far as I know, they have to bring their own PA.

€380 to rent with pa and sound engineer only holds 120 sounds like a rip off to me.

what would you expect to pay?

Pay the engineer and the hire/up keep of the PA and there's not much left for the venue. I guess it might pay a cleaner to clear up all the empties and give the jacks the once over with a mop after the gig.

Last few venues 've worked with its been no more than 200 everything included, and these venues have held over 200 people. €380 for a 120 seater venue is a rip off.

You don't know what you are talking bout and that's ok! but the thing that really pisses me off is that you could have aked someone questions to find out, how did it work? why dint't work? .... rather then presume .... presumption is the mother of ignorance....

I know exactally what i'm talking about, if its a empty venue with no drinking licences and a venue thats dependent on gigs only to function then its not going to be as successful as a venue that has a bar and a late night licence who can charge less and therefore get more acts into the venue.

People wanna go get pissed and drunk at a gig if their going most the time and to listen to music. But the majority of the time ya want to be able to skull a few pints while listening to the music.

    Hi Off the Walls
    thanks for your replay...

In 2011 thinking means "think outside the box" ... as the box isn't working anymore! and the BYO its the future! and works to bust the economy... do you read the paper? a part from getting pissed in pubs?

Also musician getting paid for their gigs and promoters for their efforts...
There is much more then a pint ... pubs aren't cool anymore ...
Look at Block T, The Complex the Mill Studios... they are the future ... art and music are not in pubs and bars anymore...
Art and music have got a soul that stands up to old fashion chaps like yourself!

    Enjoy your wknd !

This sounds like a decent place to me tbh, bring byob is actually a pretty cool aspect as that's what most teenagers do when they go to gigs anyway.

I think it's great to have somewhere to play music, and just that.
Aslo sounds like a great place for some younger folk to go and catch live music as they are the ones that make up the loyal fans for most bands and they have very few places to see live music without the worry of getting refused entry and that anyway.

Yeah, it could be more affordable, but, if you are giving out about the place only having 120 capacity I would assume you plan on having at least that many at your gig, if so, you will easily make back your 300-400 back plus profit even if you only charge €5 in.

Personally I would much rather play to a small packed out venue than a large half empty one.
