Golf Weekend in Ireland - Recommendations

    Hi Folks,

I am looking to book a nice weekend away for myself and the OH (don't worry she's a golfer too!) for her birthday coming up in July.

Looking for somewhere preferably in the west, ideally a nice 4 star hotel with a good restaurant so we don't need to leave the place too often, and a nice course where we can fit a round in. It would be nice to be close to a town center also for a bit of shopping, you know since it's her birthday and all!

Thanks for any replies in advance.

Hi Geocoder, it might help to narrow down the options if people knew which airport you are flying into, car hire or not, the max travel time, links or parkland, and green fee rates.

Hi d2ww, sorry about that should have been a bit more specific...

Not flying in, living here already :) and coming from Dublin so nowhere is really too far to drive in the west, am keen to go to Galway though. As for course type, definitely parkland, nothing too challenging as we'll want to enjoy it rather than break a few clubs. As for green fee's, I'd hope to get a full package so everything is covered, e.g 2 nights and 1 round of golf, I'd be aiming for about 200-250pps I guess.

the hotel is closed down a few years im afraid. owner went into administration. still a fantastic course tho and green fees are cheap enough. was only €25 last time i played it in april.

why not try (http://www.galwaybayhotel.net) its located right beside galway golf club in salthill (http://www.galwaygolf.com) and its a top hotel as well

If u want something a bit special and are willing to push the boat out try dromoland castle near ennis. 5 star hotel and a cracking golf course course as well

Me and a group of my friends are playing Enniscrone and Rosses Point in August. We are staying in the Sligo City Hotel which is in the middle of the town for 2 nights B & B and one 4 course evening meal. The cost of everything- hotel and golf is E199 pp person. Great value imo, playing 2 wonderful golf courses during the peak season.

supervalu getaway breaks do good golf deals. We are staying in Waterford castle for 1 night and have a round of golf on their ajoining course for 79 euro per person and you can stay 2 nights for 129 pp and this includes 1 round of golf. The castleross hotel in Killarney have deals with a round of golf in Killarney golf club which is next door to the hotel. Fota island also have midweek offers and is a nice course.

I've stayed in Farnham Estate before, the hotel is lovely, but I didn't play the course so can't comment there.

The only great golf courses in the West half of the country are Ballybunion, Lahinch, Waterville, Tralee, Adare and Old Head. The rest are mediocre at best.
