Oil Spill - Failure of Leadership - Politics at Its Worst

Was watching the news the other night. It appears that there's a skimmer that can take in roughly 90% contaminated water and output about 2-3% contaminated water.

Problem is that the EPA forbids ships to release contaminated waters in the Gulf. Discharge standards and such.

    Seriously...

With laws in the US like these, how will the spill will ever get cleaned.

As if that isn't bad enough, did you know that the US Navy has ships capable of aiding in the cleanup, however, by law they are not allowed to leave the areas they are designated to protect - in case there is an oil spill.

As commander in chief, doesn't the president lead the Navy? Doesn't the president appoint the head of FEMA, the EPA, et al?

Let's not mention the Jones Act - preventing 13 countries from helping in the Gulf. Isn't a waiver of the Jones Act something that a Rep or Congressman could take care of?

This is not Obama's Katrina, it's more like his 9/11.

BP did not intentionally attack the US. They cut safety and design costs when building their offshore rigs to increase short-term profits, not knowing that the increased risks would produce this particular spill. The consequences of both Katrina and the Gulf resulted in natural disasters, not collapsing buildings struck by hijacked commercial airlines. No, the Gulf oil spill is an Obama "Katrina" multiplied several times GW Bush's Katrina incompetence, with no relationship to a 9/11 Bin Laden terrorist attack on NY, PA (field crash), or DC.

short term thinking seems to yield many potential negative outcomes which can be utterly disasterous, in many cases it would just make sense not to cut costs and take risks, especially where your actual physical environment which you need to live in is concerned, I wonder if people will ever catch on.

IMHO, Obama does have the power to do something, but has chosen not to, without getting 'Cap and Trade' passed first. Again, he's following Rahmbo's guidance closely, e.g., "never let a crisis go to waste." Meanwhile, the Planet dies a little more every day. It's a tragedy, and Obama is culpable of a great crime against Mother Earth.
