I would say if they had some better recordings and did more work on the vocals they could be pretty good. They should prolly get a producer to help them build a bigger sound.

Her voice in "Fire" reminds me of Beth Ditto from The Gossip at points. Completely different on "The City" though which is the weaker of the two songs.

yeah they remind me a lot of Marina & The Diamonds, they're good live, probably need more work in more areas than just vocals but they're relatively new

Hi, was wondering if people could post new irish bands, very unknown or known and possibly a myspace or other link with the name. Feel free to self promote!

    Thanks

There's already a huge thread going on for unsigned/new bands here, OP, but sure while this is open here's a few suggestions.

Estel are one of my favourite Irish bands, they've been around for over 10 years now and have 3 great albums but somehow don't have a label at the moment and just aren't doing as well as they should be.

The Pulpit are great fun too, and something a bit different in the indie scene. Was good mates with the singer in the school days and she was one of the shiest, most self conscious people I knew. Absurd to see her onstage now and so confident.

Would Cast of Cheers be too big now to be 'up and coming'? Maybe so, but check 'em out anyway. Top stuff, and they're playing Whelan's next Friday with another brilliant band, Enemies.

Letter from Belgium needs more listeners, it's a side project of one of the members of Hooray for Humans. Really interesting, and it's all free to download too.

And here's a tiny bit of shameless self-promotion, since you asked for it! My mediocre attempt at being a reflective, witty artíste..

    Note:

The following comment was posted in a different (now merged thread) asking bands to post links to their stuff. I am NOT saying that we're one of the best bands Irish bands... Though if you want to say it... ;)

My band, The Riot Tapes was called "one to watch in 2010," by James Carroll at the Irish Times.

We're almost finished recording our debut in various places in Ireland, over the last six month.

    Here's some links.

This thread is for recommending unsigned/newly signed Irish bands that you like.

We'd prefer if people didn't use it to promote their own band.

Some great music floating around at the moment. But in the west Irish roots/folk/trad/blues still remains supreme by far the most popular type of live music going. For me personally i like a good live band and when im around Galway these 3 bands i go out of my way to see numerous times.

    The Rye

On 'Bandwagon TV' doing 'Sticky Mickey':

Music Video for them doing Nine Inch Nail's 'Hurt':

Were the house band in The Cellar (which gained them legendary status around Galway city) and Aras naGael for a bit and are now based in O'Connell's, Eyre Square, Galway (i think). 'Ceol agus craic? More like ceol on crack!!!' a review for them once read.

Emmet Scanlan & What The Good Thought

Music Video for 'Under The Weather':

'Without Words' - a double video for their songs 'On The Tracks' & 'Sweet Lady Life':

Multinational band putting great vibes on this singer song-writter's words. They play Neachtain's and The Crane a fair bit.

The Cartoon Thieves / No Banjo

On BBC's 'Imeall Gael' playing 'Rosie':

Playing a Shane McGowan tune called 'Mama Lou' with Sharon Shannon on 'The Late Late Show':

Were an original bands called The Cartoon Thieves, then called No Banjo as a cover band and house band in The King's Head. They then reverted back to The Cartoon Thieves for about 2/3 years and became the Roisin Dubh's most in-demand-band. They're No Banjo again and do 4 hour sets based around free BBQ's in The Roisin Dubh every Sunday evening.

God im bored this evening. lol. Not much on tape by these lots but any one of the three do awesome live gigs. Honourable mentions to The Sumbrellas, A Band Called Wanda, Blasterbra (punk) and The Kanyu Tree

+1 for Planet Parade. I saw them open for Hockey and Delorentos, and they were excellent both times.

Anyone heard of The Looks? Just found their MySpace page the other day.

Madisun are a great up and coming band. Formed in late October 2010 and based in Dublin, these lads are definitely one to watch for 2011. Soundcloud and facebook profile links here. Have a listen to Marijuana Minute and Crazytown, their two most popular songs. Feedback appreciated.

    Third Smoke
The most original Irish band I've heard in a long time. Real alternative/underground sound to them. Launch their E.P in Dundalk's Spirit Store in one week, Can't wait.

Also honourable mentions to The Curtain Thieves (http://www.myspace.com/thecurtainthieves) and Fourkicks (http://www.facebook.com/fourkicksonline) both great live bands.

Anybody hear of Royseven? I stumbled upon them when their video for 'Killer' was put on the Roadrunner records youtube page in december. Been keeping tabs on them since. They have that deadly song 'We should be lovers' all over the radio now at the moment and have sold out an Academy gig the day before paddys day. If anybody is interested in them their album is only out this week and on a special for 5 euro on 7digital.ie and just under 8 euro on itunes. I'm really impressed with them so far and the album is a cracker. Irish music has been deadly the past few years. Really glad it's getting noticed.

I saw Bipolar empire live recently and thought they were brilliant. Kanyu Tree and Royseven are poppy enough for mainstream audiences but doubt they will make it big internationally. From a cynical perspective Bressie probably has the best connections to make it big!

Have you checked out New Secret Weapon yet? They're not poppy, but I think they're on another level to those bands mentioned.

lot of good bands mentioned here, but with 99% of them, we have heard it all before, might get an album or two, then everyone will move on. Are there any truly great bands doing the rounds? In my opinion, the only decent band doing the rounds these days from Ireland with potential staying power are the Villagers. Next in line would be And So I Watch You From Afar, (if we're talking about the island of Ireland), though how many more times can they make the same album with the same sound they have could be their undoing, though they are definitely one of the best bands I have seen live for energy.

dREA is good, though album not out yet...
