Microphone in workplace

    Hi all,

I've done a search on this but haven't found a related thread so apologies if one already exists.

Does anyone know anything about the legalities of an employer placing a recording microphone in the workplace, without telling staff and without any staff member's consent.

It's a retail business with several stores. We've always had CCTV but last week microphones were installed. Not one staff member across any store is happy about it, and when questioned, the area manager made some bumbling excuses, firstly that they weren't active (then why install them?) and then that they were for the higher up powers, so that they can monitor that we are making the appropriate sales pitches.

Anyone got any thoughts on this?
