hi all, just got a new lurcher pup last tuesday, my lab was killed on the road a month ago and i decided to go for something different this time as i've been out hunting rabbits and fox with mates who have lurchers and I love it!!!
I'm not clear on the law with regards to running a hare, if I go out in january or febuary on land I have permission to hunt on and let the dog loose on a hare am I breaking the law?

Sorry to hear about your Lab - the best dog I ever had was a Lab/Retreiver cross, a magnificient animal that was cut down in his prime in the same way. Finding his broken body on the side of the road still haunts me to this day:(

lovely lookin pup. get him a rabbit skin and pull it behind a bike or quad. walk him through sheep as much as poss. let him kno he,s not after them early. not tellin you how to suck eggs, but all helps. i miss the runnin dogs!!! good luck with him

cheers jim, just read the hunting law section in a thread above, you can hunt hares with a firearm from the 26th of sept to the 28th of febuary but you cant loose a dog on one unless its at a club coursing event and those dogs are musselled, thats crazy when i started shooting i was well warned not to shoot a hare "leave them for the dogs" i was told, at least with a dog the quarry is either going to get away or get killed quickly and not running off to suffer for two days with a .22 in its belly

........not running off to suffer for two days with a .22 in its belly

Your obviously new to this so I'll not take offence to that ;)

You cannot shoot a hare with any rifle ONLY a shotgun and within the season as stated above!

And to say here that your sport is more humane than mine is not a good idea ;)

Also hares under the law are game not "virmin"

I or none of my shooting friends shoot hares as they get enough hassle from SOME lads with lurchers catching them live and selling them illegally to others ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 348 ✭✭virminhunter

I read the wildlife act(wild mammals)1998 it just said firearms and didnt specify shotgun or rifle(I musta read the wrong one or something), I've been hunting with rifle and shotgun years and I'm not trying to disrespect the shooting fraternaty in any way, shape or form, ya must be readin me wrong, i just thought the law was unfair and disagreed with it.

just because my name says "virminhunter" doesnt mean i regard hares as virmin.

you can't tar everyone in a sport with the same brush just because someone has a lurcher doesn't mean he's selling live hares...

Just remember, ignorance of the law is not a defence in law ;) Most of the laws here to do with filedsports are unfair to somebody and look like they're gonna get a lot more unfair for some ..........

Never said it did. I just told you what SOME of the lads in my area are doing with lurchers and advised you that hares are game ;) (see edit in my original post)

    I agree

Your statement could be taken as everyone using a 22 is shooting hares and leaving them to die for two days ;)

    Lovely looking pup btw ;)

Well smokin, thanks she's 3/8hound, 1/4 laguna whippet, 1/4 bull terrier and an 1/8 collie, I'll start her on rabbits and hopefully move on to charly, as far as i know thats about two years down the line and I'll have to send her for her first one with an experienced dog by her side to educate her!

hi all, just got a new lurcher pup last tuesday,

really nice pup , i was out couple of nights last year with one the lads 2 lurchers , theres a brillant thrill in it , and it would get you very fit

will you use him as a gun dog aswell ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 348 ✭✭virminhunter

well smokin i got mine last tuesday at 9 weeks(off a fella in wexford) she was crying the first few nights too but shes grand now she kinda knows the new routine, if its really bad and ya cant sleep try leaving a tickin clock and a warm hot waterbottle in her bed it'll remind her of her mothers warmth and heart beat, but theres probably no need it a couple of nights and it'll pass.

i live in laois could be a bit too much drivin on a winters night, but my girlfriends from wexford so i might be down there a few nights during the winter, we'll see:)

hiya foxer, thanks, no i dont think i'll be usin her as a gundog, she'd probably retrieve shot rabbits etc.(could be hard mouthed) but its not what i want her for, planning on getting a german short haired pointer at some stage for the pheasants but i havent got the dollars or time to train one at the moment.

some fellas use them on beating lines ,dont know what cross would be best thought, he might be worth a try if his the only dog you have

    either way best of luck;)

This is one good reason if not the reason to leave the hares alone. There are plenty of other things you can get your thrill from.

In answer to the original question, you can only hunt a Hare under licence, with a gun that's a game licence. Only available with a shotgun.
With dogs, again they can only be hunted under licence, from gormless at the moment.
Every season the coursing and beagling clubs must apply to him for a licence to hunt and course Hares and also to net the for coursing meets.

There is a lot of disinformation about Hares at the moment as the DUP and the Greens in the North are trying to make it illegal to hunt Hares.

The Article states there used to be hundreds of thousands of Hares in Ireland but now there is only 27,000. But this is the number in the 6 counties only, which hasn't really changes since 2002. Although number can fluctuate wildly due to weather.

Last year Queens University studies on Hares showed hunting is not a significant factor in Hare numbers , accounting for less than 1% of mortalities.

The main problems are draining and development of land. Mono agriculture and harvesting methods.

So what do the Greens do? try and ban hunting, the one thing that will have no effect

    from the link above
the Irish hare population is in danger of going the same way as the corncrake, it has been claimed. Hundreds of thousands of hares could be found across the countryside at the turn of the 20th century, but the numbers last year were an estimated 27,400.

    from the NPWS
A night-time survey carried out in 2002 estimated the Northern Irish hare population to be
between 7,000 and 25,200, indicating that hare numbers had not changed significantly since
the previous survey (Preston et al., 2002).
1.4. Repeat night-time surveys were undertaken in spring 2004 and spring 2005. In 2004, the
population was estimated as being between 59,700 and 86,900 (5.1 hares per km2)

I dont know who did that report or why but it stated that modern agriculture was to blame for the Hares demise ( silage ) and didnt mention shooting or hunting so your post is about what?

Silage can wipe out many animals and birds due to modern machinery and teh speed of cutting grass.

Most of my neighbors start mowing in th emiddle of the field, however contractors do not as they want speed not hares/ground bird safety conciderations.

    What is my post about?
    2 things,
    one answering the original question
second, to show that the article was misrepresenting the number of Hares in Ireland.
    Hope that's okay?

But Bryan as far as i know the Greens have nothing to do with that report, i dont know who made it i just found it on yahoo today and remembered this topic.

As regards banning hunting? as far as i can make out the greens have only ever wanted to ban stag hunting with dogs. People speculate on what they or others want to do which is just hot air untill they whoever they are actually say what they want to do.

Sorry Fodda, i meant the Greens in the North of Ireland.

    http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/local-national/northern-ireland-bans-hare-coursing-and-fox-hunting-could-be-next-14852888.html

    The Greens in the Republic?

    7. Blood sports
7.1 When in government, the Green Party will introduce legislation to end blood sports.

I remember seeing an interview with Trevor Sargent a couple of months ago where he stated that the main agenda of the Green party was to ban all sports which involve animal on animal contact!
To me this means, dog on rabbiit, pheasant, fox , duck, the whole lot!

So i don't think their gonna be happy with just banning stag hunting!
