I know this is a stupid thing to be asking here as every garda differs but whats a guards limit for stopping people for speeding on a motorway.

The reason i ask is i use the M8 a lot and normally set my cc at 140 ish. I have passed a few speed checks and have never been followed. I was going to dublin on friday and passed a unmarked car on the hard shoulder, he had the gun out and i passed him before i seen him:o.

I dont cross the 60 or 50kph limits ever. Its only on the motorway so im just wondering would most fellas here stop someone for that speed..

    Thanks for the replies.

I was told anything over 12% and you could get in trouble. I set the cruise control at 134.4 on the motorway;)

What baffles me is the Garda leniance on middle lane drivers & slow moving cars in the over taking lane, those people should be off the road, there putting every other driver under pressure.

Anybody caught driving in the inside lane with no other traffic in it should be given a medal.

    It won't. (mod wink)

I don't really think any serving Gardai will tell you, because it's actually internal stuff and that's not allowed here.

A few years back there was a highly advertised "zero tolerance" campaign for speeding. It didn't last. With the introduction of the private speed cameras I wouldn't be surprised to see a new policy put forward though.

I remember that allright. I suppose it depends on a lot of things i suppose. I asked a mate on tc. He said weather will influence him along with the car type or condition. I suppose it makes sence. Big difference doing 140 in a new audi A6 as opposed to a clapped out punto:).

As psni said I dont think any serving member will comment on this here as its not something we would discuss on an ES forum......esp when its against the charter.

However some members may comment on motors/legal etc. ;)

I know. I thought it strange that he didnt go after me and i was over 20kms over the limit. He must have liked the look of me:)

While its technically illegal. Motorways in ireland are built to accomodate speeds of higher than 120.

I would imagine it depends on the condition of the car, look of the driver, road/weather conditions, and of course traffic!

While ive no idea what the tolerence is id imagine theres no hard and fast rule to it!

    Good post.

Most of the time Gardai doing speed checks would be from the Traffic corps.

They are highly trained drivers who take all factors into consideration as you pointed out. surface, weather, amount of road users, condition of vehicle etc etc.

Does anyone know what the largest speeding ticket was in terms of KPH was in Ireland/NI?

I dont know but a mate in the t.c told me he caught a fella doing 170kph on a 80 kph road :p

140 on the speedo will be a fair margin less than that though iin reality. Car speedo have to over-read speed. IIRC its +10% (its come up in motors several times)

so 120 is 120+12=132 so 140 is only going to be 126-128, not that much over the limit to be worth it...

If you have a GPS that gives speed, compare it to the speedo next time you are cruising on the motorway, the GPS is more accurate and you will see the difference :)

Its UP TO 10% + 4 k/ph inaccuracy thats allowed. Your car could be anywhere from 0% to the max allowed in accuracy I certainly for one would not ever rely on it being the full amount out.

Highest I've heard of is 203km/h.
    Personally seen:
5series speeding at over 200km/h on the M7 before(pootling along at 130, car flashes by me in an instant, actually managed to make my almost 2ton car shake, and is quickly followed by a red mondeo doing even faster :pac:)

N7 just ouside Limerick, about 30 cars in a line doing 80km/h - a UK reg Honda s2000 overtakes all 30 in seconds, the noise of the thing going past was absolutely insane.
