Don't you need to be an accredited/chartered Technologist with the assosicated PLI etc in order to do that outside of an architectural practice?

its necessary to have adequate PI insurance AND the ability to have your certificates accepted by solicitors...

theres no requirement to be a member of CIAT, although that would help in getting your certs accepted... but at the end of the day the law society does not require membership of ANY body in order to certify works...

as to your other question, why would your "work" need to be signed off by another architect / engineer ??.... either they are involved in the build as certifiers of they are not....

i am a graduate hons degree architectural technology, the questions are to establish if it is possible to offer services to the public , and have your drawings covered by architect/ engineer. i do know of a case of this process, but i would like to know if it is acceptable professional practice

If you are involved in on site procedures, then PI or a certifier will be needed.

However, many people provide a planning application service where they carry out the PP application and leave it there. It is common where the client might not build straight away or wants to project manage themselves

From a 'bank stage release' point it is possible to do this, if say you are looking after everything on site and you get an established Architect/Engineer/AT to sign off the stages (if the bank won't accept you). Nobody likes this option as it doubles up work, usually costs more and can get confusing. But it is possible to do.

does this mean that PI is not required if i only undertake planning drawings:confused:

Just to say that it is also possible to f**k up a planning application where you could become liable for a mistake.

Bottom line always have PI insurance.

I for one would never certify anyone else's work. I've seen a few disasters in the past, especially from the cut and paste brigade ;)

applications can be submitted without the requirement for PI insurance.... but that doesnt mean that its necessarily a good idea. It is theoretical that an agent could be acted against if a client feels he acted inappropriately or unprofessionally during a planning application, in which the applicant was at a loss as a result.

I can think of some cases....

thanks for all the good information. just proves that it is not really worth the chance to do private work for the public. What would the issues if i were to get freelance work from an architects office. would i still need to PI insurance for myself ?

I would ask if it would be possible that they cover you with their PI, some will others won't, but discuss that before putting your neck on the line.

I know of one case where the freelancer got the shock of their life when something went wrong and it was assumed they had PI.
