There seems to be alot of info in different threads regarding where/when the iphone will be available.

Since I did not pre register for last thursdays launch, I would like to know what is the best way for me to go about getting one?

I read in another thread that apple in Belfast are taking reservations via phone for next weeks batch?

    Thanks in advance.

yeah apple in belfast is your only bet, i went up today and reserved one, hoping it'll be in this week.

they'll email ya and let you know it's in store waiting for you.

i'd say everyone who reserves one now at this stage will prob get one.

Yeah that would be great? Wonder if you can reserve over the phone?

Do you know anyone with a UK address?

Buy one direct from the UK Apple Store and have it shipped there.
    SIM free, no problem.

They were shipping by 14th July, but now it's '3 weeks', which is the 17th judging by today's date isn't it? :)

considering the iphone 4 should be widely available down here by Xmas, I'd say she would get back what she paid minus 150 euro(assuming its in pristine condition)

A better idea could possibly be to keep the sim free and sell the upgrade(unopened/sealed). She should be able to get her provider to send the imei to apple for unlocking , so could be sold as sim free.

Just to say she's obviously expecting to make a loss. I can't see O2 issuing an unlock code for a brand new iPhone!

hmm, I may be mistaken, but I think o2 will issue an unlock code for a new iphone- as long as you sign the 18 month contract.

Even then, I couldn't see them unlocking it for a few months after signing up?

I rang up the store in Belfast and got put onto the priority list for the next batch that they receive.

She said I'll get an email to confirm I've been added to the list and then another email when it comes into the store!

Now, just have to wait and see how long it takes for them to get another batch in!

    No simfree in the US.
No PAYG in the US, contract only and locked to AT&T.
No unlock available for the 4 yet as it runs a different baseband.

Kind-of. iPhone 4 is available sim free in the US too. So it will be fine with a meteor sim. [EDIT]---- This is not correct sorry. [/EDIT]

Also the unlock which is available now for the newer baseband is dependent on a jailbreak which isn't out yet.

    Cheers

the US website says you have to take out a 2 year AT&T plan.

Ooops, sorry for giving the wrong info! It will be locked but you can buy it without contract for an increased price. That info is in the small print on the iPhone page on Apple site. It's the 'buy as a gift' option.

If the jailbreak comes out before the guy travels then he could buy it and bring it, allowing it to be jailbroken and unlocked.

    Sorry again.

i think its kinda funny that a single iphone retailer in belfast right now has a complete monopoly on the iphone 4 for the entire country of ireland

how come the iphone 4 is available sim free from apple in the uk?

werent all previous versions networked locked in the uk?

how much does it cost in belfast sim free?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 3,793 Mod ✭✭✭✭eeloe

    It costs ¥17,000,000 in belfast!

A simple read of any thread on the site will tell you the sim free price!

The amount it costs them to subsidise it? And if they get caught with another fiasco like the contract cancelling they will left well out of pocket.

That would be great if the iPhone4 ran the same baseband as the previous models. But it doesn't, so an unlock for locked versions will be a while.

They seem to be people who were there 12 months, paid over €150 in PAYG charges or released under the no-penalty contract escape. I don't recall seeing anyone getting a contract iPhone and being unlocked for no reason after a week ?hey haven't done it with any other mobiles, I fail to see why they would change for the iPhone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,534 ✭✭✭✭guil

i only had mine 2 or 3 months before they announced it, i got mine unlocked
i have a blackberry on the same account and requested the unlock code after 6 weeks and they're supplying it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,522 ✭✭✭digitaldr

In contract phones can be unlocked see this post from the O2 forum. Obviously doesn't release you from the contract though!

Edit sorry forgot the link http://forums.o2online.ie/forums/showthread.php?9038-iPhone-Unlocking&p=103119&viewfull=1#post103119

I know that. We seem to be discussing the difference between "a few months" and "2 or 3 months" now....:D

Its actually very strange. O2 flat out refused to unlock an iPhone until 18 month contract had been completed. Yet they changed that the MINUTE VF announced they were going to get it. If it had been me, I would have stuck people with the 18 months, let the fuss die down with VF, and then see if they wanted to change over after 18 months. VF tariffs are almost identical, apart from the absolutely useless bog-standard one with no minutes, so O2 could have definitely held the cheapest segment, no problem. Just very weird to me.

I wonder if the iPhone 4 will be subsidised much once it hits O2 Speakeasy over here...

At least 600 quid anyway....just take a look at the current 3GS prices on Speakeasy as a guide

I was talking to a guy in O2 today and he said they'd be available next month (under contract). I'm due an upgrade so I'll hold off until then once there's no delays.

What are the main advantages to having one unlocked/jail-broken?

unlocked would let ya use any sim
jailbroken will allow to install third party apps and a lot of other stuff that apple dont want
