Cancellation of Ryanair Flight from Cork to Alicante

    As it happened, I was in Spain on the day of the French ATC strike. I met a man in Malaga who had just arrived from Cardiff having been delayed by two hours. He said his aircraft had to fly across the south of Ireland and down in order to avoid the French ATC area. I don't know anything about ATC but if that man's airline could find a way around the ATC strike you'd think Ryanair could have done the same for their hapless Cork passengers.

    I paid significantly more to Aer Lingus for my Cork Malaga flights than I would have had I travelled Ryanair. I'm glad I did. I make a point of never travelling Ryanair unless I have to. The Examiner story simply underscores that resolve.

    "Last night, a spokesperson for the budget airline said: "Ryanair sincerely apologises to all affected passengers for the cancellation caused by French air traffic controllers’ strike action."

    The cancellation was "outside our control," the spokesperson added."


    Thats a crock of ****. The aircraft actually did landed in Cork and was then grounded? Most other airlines merely routed over the Bay of Biscay or even further out to avod French airspace. That FR aircraft could have gone aroundt he affeceted area.

    ya is that oceanic airspace??? is FR fitted with HF radio comms which are needed to enter oceanic airspace?????? were the crew out of hours by the time it got in???????

    I flew out of Madrid with FR on Tuesday 15th June when the strike was ongoing. The pilot told us that they had a slot and if we missed it we'd be at the mercy of Brussels for a path over France. First time i've ever seen people take their seats quickly!!

    Apologises. By Bay of Biscay I was referring to T9 and others further out. How far out is T9?

    Didn't realise French ATC went right out into the Bay. Didn't know that about the FR B738s,no HF radio seems like a strange option,I do realise the majority of their routes are overland so no need in theory.

    LASNO is at 48N09W, so the T9 runs at 09W, the Brest FIR boundry is at 08W

    Some of the older RYR a/c had HF- the EI-CSx and DAx series- new orders do not though. They have a HF radio fitted for the ferry flight but tis removed after that. Once upon a time they did use the T9 and indeed the T16 for Spain flights but obviously they no longer can

    Good enough reason never to use Ryanair when flying to Spain.

    Given the fact that a strike by French Air Traffic Controllers at least once a year is a racing certainty you would think any airline would adopt the prudent tactic of having the HR radio option in order to minimise disruption.

    Presumably fitting such a radio would add €15.99 to the overall price of the aircraft so Ryanair decided to eliminate it entirely in the interests of minimising costs. The hell with the families whose holiday plans are destroyed.

    Surely by being able to avoid using French airspace normally FR would not incur any ATC fees to France, thus saving money over the lifespan of an aircraft using T9 Ireland to Spain/Portugal/Morocco?

    But instead they'd incur fees with Shanwick..

    There's also an issue with not all pilots having HF experience

    Do you actually work for ryanair? cause otherwise im finding it hard to believe all the assumptions your throwing around.

    p.s We get it you dont like ryanair. No need to keep emphasing it.
