Just bumping this as it's on tonight.
21:05 How to Build a Jumbo Jet Engine (T) Documentary following workers at Rolls-Royce's Derby factory, as they construct the company's Trent 1000 jet engine in preparation for its maiden flight attached to a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The film explores the technology involved in the engine's construction, and charts the ups and downs of working on the factory's assembly line. Narrated by Gerard Fletcher.

I watched it there this evening and it was very detailed. What did you think you it?

    I'm new here btw. Hello.

I thought it was fascinating. 30,000-40,000 parts in each engine. One produced every 36 hours. And the design of the fan blades and turbine blades is so intricate - and top secret, grr. Definitely worth watching.

Excellent programme with just the right mix of techhie vs man-in-street data.

What is doubly and truly depressing is the knowledge that several hundred fully qualified Aircraft Engineering Tradespeople, for whom these types of Engines were bread and butter, are currently being dropped from Irelands available resources thanks to a Government Policy of indecision and misinformation.

The current situation regarding the former FLS Engineering staff is a National Disgrace and entirely intertwined with Political Interference without bothering to gen-up on the huge potential which will return in the Avation engineering sector.

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

Fascinating programme. What really impressed me is that they monitor their engines live (or almost live - data is sent every 1 minute) as aircraft fly around the world 24/7. Computers process all the incoming data and anything out of the ordinary is then highlighted to a technician to assess. Amazing and sort of comforting!

    Good programme.

Even though I know how a turbofan engine works it never ceases to amaze me that they work so well and so reliably under such extreme conditions for millions of miles.
The Trent class engine traces its roots back to the '70s when stuff was designed with pencils and slide rules and very basic computers!
How do you get your head around stuff like that?

It's repeated on BBC2 tonight, I can't wait to see it.

Pretty impressive when they "implode" the engine on the test rig to check that the fan casing will contain all "the bits" should a fan blade detach and end up inside the engine. A lot of money disappearing in a few seconds! Excellent programme though and well worth a watch.

Is there a way to see this and the sub programme that doesn't involve BBC iPlayer (not available in Ireland)? Raging I missed this...

You need a UK proxy to use the BBC iPlayer.

Was a really good programme, especially the part where they destroyed the engine to test the casing:D

Really excellent programme. Like another user said here I had a pretty good knowledge of how the engine actually works but to see one being created was truly incredible. The live support centre was also incredible. Comforting to see every single part being fitted and every nut and bolt tightened by hand.

Good to see that there is still some proper TV being made.

aaah saw the old workplace (the materials centre) even saw someone recognised, the labs dont look like the changed in the 13 years since i left
great program showed a lot more than i thought they would.
remeber boeing trying to poach engineers and hardly any left cos the designing a tube with wings bolted on was too boring ! (which i guess it is after working with superplastic formed fan blades or single crystal turbine blades)
