Wing Tsun for Self defence?

    Hi Folks,

I'd be grateful for any information on whether Wing Tsun is good for self protection.

I'm a 44 year old, fairly unfit guy, with creaky elbows & knees (bad training in the 1980s), and I'm just looking for something that will get me out of a jam if needed.

I like the idea of a small syllabus & an approach that's based on principles, but it sometimes seems that it's a bit restrictive i.e. having to maintain spinal/stance alignments while under severe pressure (i.e. a street assault).

    Hi Lassard,

Regarding spinal alignment being restrictive, I am only driving about 3-4 years and I remember how awkward learning to drive felt and how "restrictive" it felt at the time. Its the same with Wing Tsun, it can feel awkward at the start but after a while it becomes natural and you don't think about it.

All I can say is try a few classes, we will put on a pair or gloves at the end and gently try to hit you. As time goes on and the movements become more natural, we will increase the pressure. Some of the other lads started in their 40s and don't have any problems.

First class is free. What the hell, as you are on boards.ie the first two classes are free. :D

    Regards,

    Michael

    Thanks Michael,

I'm based in Dublin 2 so my nearest contact would be Aidan Canavan.

    Best Regards

    Hi Lassard,

I am currently running three WingTsun classes a week ( Tuesday - Thursday - Saturday ) in Dublin 2 - Synge Street, Hall of Primary School .

It is never too late, know plenty of partners that started at that age. First class is free. You can visit our website at Wingtsun.webs.com. ( website is at his first stages :) )

    Bye

    Hi Lassard,

to answer your very first question about WingTsun for self-defence: yes it works. I could experienced it myself and few partners of mine as well. It worked not only when it came to physical fight, but a couple of time it also worked in the early stages of the " discussion" with guys in front of me.

    Hope this answer your question.

    Bye

    Massimo
