In fairness upgrading hard drives is pretty easy, I've done it in many laptops I've owned and from what I've seen macs are quite easy

This would do you, I'm sure tutorials online will be very easy to follow!:

Yeah, replacing the hard drive in the current Macbooks is very easy. It is considered a user-replaceable part by Apple, so won't void your warranty.

That is true but OP should be made aware that if he replaces the HD then the warranty will not cover the new hard drive should an issue arise with it. If it's a new machine that OP is buying, it's €135 to upgrade to the 500 GB HD so they may be better off getting it with it fitted from the off.

I think if the hard drive fails etc which might be covered by your warranty/applecare won't be covered if you upgrade it to one that's not the original drive it was sold with.

There won't be any problems once you buy from a reputable supplier such as www.crucial.com or www.komplett.ie etc and follow the instructions on a decent site like www.ifixit.com to replace the hard drive. Remember to have install discs handy as well :)

In simple terms, in the event of Apple issuing a callback or warranty repair the hard drive you install isn't covered as it isn't Apples hard drive.

It's what you want but you may be clobbered with shipping and excise taxes from American sites; try and source it from a site in the EU if possible.

Stay away from Seagate, go for Western Digital or something else!

I've had several Western Digital drives fail on me within 2 years. I've had slightly better luck with Seagate. Wouldn't stop me from buying another Western Digital, though. Everyone's experiences are different.

I really don't think there's any difference in reliability between the major brands except luck of the draw. All hard drives are the same, i.e. sh*t and prone to failure. Never trust them. I always work on the assumption that they are going to fail any minute.

Just go for the one with the better warranty and use Time Machine to back up constantly.
