I just dont know where to start in looking for a job in the IT sector.
I graduated with a Higher Diploma in Systems Analysis almost two years ago. The job i currently work in is a retail position as it was the only thing that came along at the time. However, i recently have received a promotion to a managerial position, would this help me?

I'm not exactly sure what part i would like to work in. I do enjoy web design but have not touched any of it since i graduated.

Does anyone have any helpful hints where i should start in preparing myself for a career in IT?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

IT is a large field. What area do you think you want to work in?

Here are a few to consider:
    Software design/development
    Networking/systems administration
    Database administration
    Software implementation analyst
    Testing/quality assurance

Junior Business Systems Analyst is where I believe you should look.

However you may require a full degree to get a job like this. But perhaps your experience might help. Hard to know. It is the type of job a systems analysis course was designed for.

Who does the IT for the company that you're working for? Any chance of you getting seconded onto a project with them, for example as a subject-matter-expert from the "shop floor"? IMHO the best analysts come up from within the business or from the "tech" roles, not from "analysis" training courses, so I'd be recommending that you look for jobs where you can move sideways into IT.

TBH, in the current labour market, I think you'll be pushing it to get into an IT job if you haven't used your skills for two years.

If you want to polish you skills, can you volunteer to do a project for some community group? Or think of a topic of your own that you'd like to create a website about?

I work in the IT section myself and im gonna be honest with you.

I reckon your gonna have to start at the call center level where you basically give IT support to customers to get yourself on the ladder, this is where everyone began unless their lucky, your not gonna just walk into a great job. Then improve your skills and start working towards your ideal role, your first IT job is always going to be the worst - Mine was

Maybe have a refresher course or something to bring back your skills then try and do volentry work (once a week or something) with a company, least if you get your foot in the door they might consider you for jobs that come up if they like what they see

Best of luck and i hope it works out for you
