Alright, so i'm looking for a cheapish compact camera to bring away with me on holidays. I have a Canon 350D with a fair few lenses, but it's big, and i'd be afraid of losing it while abroad(Going inter-railing around europe).
I came across a Samsung ST70 for €130 which looks really good for the cash, 720p video, 14MP(although i'm not overly concerned with megapixels tbh), it has a nice wide lens and optical zoom all in a slim package.
Does anyone have any views on the samsung, or have any alternatives?
    Cheers,
    Alan.

if i was buying a compact, i'd give serious thought to one of the casio exilim models, simply because they can shoot video at up to 560fps (admittedly at a much reduced res, but 400fps at quite a reasonable res).

Tbh, the video aspect is not a big thing for me, primarily i want it for still photography. But the option for 720p is a nice plus on the Samsung.

what about a waterproof yoke like this? this one here for 140 and you can literally bring it anywhere. admittedly the controls would be lacking but one of my friends has one and loves it:)

get the tech specs at dpreview if you're interested. you have a dslr so this might be the perfect partner to that:)

Interesting suggestion. I read a few reviews, and some suggest that it's low light performance isn't the best. Tbh, i feel like i'm getting less of a camera for the cash just because it's waterproof if you get me. I'd rather get better shots than have a waterproof cam with decent shots.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions lads, very much appreciated!

Some of the Sony P&S have that panorama sweep option on them and it is excellent, higher models have respectable high iso (for a P&S)

Interesting, i'll definitely check them out. I see a lot of the P&S's have quite high ISO anyway, a lot around that price range would have 3200. Although, how they perform at that high an ISO would be questionable.
So far i'm very tempted by the Samsung ST70, seems really nice for the cash, the only thing that's holding me back is that it appears to only take micro sd card, not a big issue really, i have an 8Gb one at home.
I'd probably pick up a few 2Gb/4Gb cards rather than one large one.

    Samsung ST70
    Lumix DMC-FS10

At the minute these are the two contenders, i like the look of the Samsung, and the price is pretty good. I know pixmania are terrible though...

The lumix is on amazon for similar price, but with free delivery (115gbp=139eur)

You know what, i never actually checked amazon! Thanks for that, both the lumix and the samsung are around the same price, with free delivery!

So which would you go for? They're both similarly spec'd, both the same kind of price. Decisions decisions.....

It's a nice camera alright, but it's just too expensive, this will be a holiday camera, that i'd hope to keep and not lose on holiday, but i wouldn't be the end of the world if it was lost/stolen/dropped etc.
    Cheers for the link though.

canon a480, pretty basic compact but image quality is good and will do raw and other stuff if you use an sd card with chdk on it
