Charlie Haughey & the IR8M

I was just reading Haugheys Wiki page where it says between 1979 and 1986 he collected IR8M from various benefactors and businessmen.(Moriarty tribunal as the source) It got me thinking that in todays money the sum is probably somewhere in the order of 20-25M euro, a staggering amount in anyones terms.

So Im trying to think back and recollect any other political leader in the Western world having gained so much during their time in office through corruption. I can recall Blair being accused of selling peerages but AFAIR the money was for the Labour party, not for Blair personally. Then the story about Kofi Annans son fiddling a few million from the Iraq Oil for Food scheme came to mind but still no-where near the sum that Haughey pulled. I can't seem to think of any other leader in a western nation that left office having gained so much financially from their term there.

So my question is this- amongst politicans in the western world, does Charlie Haughey's acquisition of 20 odd million rank as the largest sum ever gained in this manner by a political leader? Or put more simply- are there any politicans who can top Haughey in the money grabbing stakes?

Silvio Berlusconi kept himself out of jail, I'd imagine he had a few fiddles on the go as well.

For sure, there's question marks over Silvio. Though I think he was already minted before entering politics- his corruption was probably more about fixing rules/regulations of industries he's vested in rather than just taking bribes as he already had billions to begin with. But alas as he's fixed the judical system to ensure he cant be tried then we'll never truly know.

But can anyone think of another western leader who is responsible for such large donations and has been taken as fact by an indpendent tribunal or investigation?

I'd hazard a guess that Francois Mitterand probably got his hands on a similar amount.
