If your union drops a claim, can an individual or group of individuals still go ahead with the claim?

I know that independent individuals and groups can lodge complaints, but does it make a difference if your union agrees to withdraw its claim?

They were told that if the claim proceeded to the Labour Court, the government would withdraw funding from the schools involved in the claim and as a result there would be job losses. A vote was taken and the claim was dropped.
