Gym Recommendations

    Hi all,

Have been thinking about joining a gym lately and since I've been packing on the pounds with the introduction of KFC I think it's about time I kicked myself into doing it.

Has anyone got any recommendations? I'd be interested to hear about how busy the gym gets, the price (or any special deals), pool size, classes etc.

Have gotten information about the Maldron in Oranmore and the Carlton but more information from gym goer's rather than leaflets.

    Thanks !

The best thing would be to visit to a few and try them out for yourself. I'd imagine there's some good membership deals during the summer as people have more options to exercise outdoors.

I'm not a member but go to the Kingfisher NUIG for exercise dance classes, and they have lovely mirrored studios for all their classes. I've had a peek at the gym there and it's industrial size, multiples of all kinds of exercise machines. The pool looks the standard size but is never too busy on Wed nights anyway.

Is anyone a member at the renmore kingfisher and what are you paying?

Depends wheres convienent to your living location

    Maldron good equipment.

    NUIG likewise

Ocean Fitness Salthill same as above.

    Carlton Hotel ditto

depends what the wallet wants. Good deals for summer and numbers attending are always lower in summer months especially if we have the weather

€475. Nice pool, sauna steam room etc.

It has never been that crowded when I've been in (early evening).

I joined up at the same time as another lad. He did the legwork, checking out the other gyms in the city and he reckoned the Renmore Kingfisher seemed to be the best deal taking price and facilities into account.

The guy who was selling me the membership was quite pushy (still professional though), but I'm well able to see past the sales pitch.

The staff I've dealt with for assessments etc. were very good and seem to know what they are doing, not that I would know any different anyway.

Sorry but have to disagree here, equipment is terrible in Maldron. The dont have a bench, sqaut or power rack. All they have is smith machine, few DBs and a dip, chin rack. Pretty poor in fairness. Area is tiny too. If any interest in doing weights at all, avoid here.

Wow I think the NUIG Kingfisher was advertised as 750 if you aren't a student or alumni, that's a massive price difference between the two if that's still the case. Have to say though if the staff are of the same level as NUIG then they don't know much tbh...

From my point of view, the only contact with staff that holds any importance for me is when I have my assessments done.

It's hardly rocket science. A bit of advice on how much you should be doing, encourage you to eat healthy... yada yada.

I'm sure experience and training helps them gauge the intensity of a person's workout plan.

What is it about the staff in NUIG that you think they should know more about, out of curiousity?

Are you a high-performance athlete that requires expert advise on everything or something?

(I don't mean that to sound as confrontational as it does... trust me)

Its ok I don't think you're being confrontational. I've seen the trainers show people around the gym before, and each trainer I've seen has had really poor form on all the exercises they did, and neglect to teach or improve the way their trainees do the exercises, even when doing things dangerously (although I guess how can you correct something you can't do right yourself). Also they normally just show the new trainees how each machine works and that's it, without thinking about what is best for the trainee.
I'll admit I haven't had an assessment done by the staff, but I've no confidence in their ability to do one based on what I've seen.

What are the membership rates for NRG on Bohermore does anyone know? Couldn't find anything on their website. Looking for a gym that's open early in the morning and they open at 06:30am.

I think around 495 per annum, for a one off payment.
That gets you use of Bohermore AND Clybaun clubs.
A bit cheaper for off peak I think, and more if you do direct debit monthly

I paid 420 upfront for a 12-month membership to NRG last November. It's okay but I have the same issue that Brian mentioned. I cringe to see people doing things incorrectly and not being given any instruction, even in classes! And would it be so awful to make the classes a bit of fun? They are sooo boring. There is also never anyone on the floor if you have a question about a piece of equipment.
