I'm about to get started with this and was wondering would I be better off starting with the previous version (as this has just been released). For the sake of compatible widgets etc.

Nah I just upgraded 2 sites, and all the plugins still work. To be honest, 3.0 isn't a whole lot different.

Had some problems with some templates when upgrading to 3.0 but it is worth the effort. Great new Menus.
