Suzuki Liana failed NCT because they were worn. Was told it would be a big deal to replace them and it would cost hundreds. Local motor factors sold me "universal" ones for fourteen euro each and local mechanic fitted them for eighty euro. Not bad. Mechanic said "universal" type are more flexible, therefore less labour. Passed NCT. :o

i dont think so i failed nct on same problem and got universal ones for 10r each and both fitted for 80, 40 per wheel, its involves taking off the drive shaft amongst other things so is quite messy job, 80 is not bad

Their just rubber covers to protect the cv joints

Quite an easy job to replace, had to replace them on my skoda when the steering rack failed, all the damned fluid was leaking into the boots !

I had to have mine done for the nct as well.

The day after they were done the driveshaft snapped, luckily I managed to get one from a scrap yard. saved a few hundred euro.

i did one for my NCT and it cost the same (well, 110 so more for 1 really).

    Seems to be fairly standard?

I had the same problem with one CV boot, the mechanic said he wanted to replace the CV joint entirely because it was likely dirt had got into the joint and it would probably fail soon anyway. Is this likely? Could he have said this based on the condition of the boot, if it was particularly badly damaged? Paid about €120 so doesn't seem too unreasonable compared to the above prices for just getting the boot replaced.

If there was dirt in the joint you would know by now. Is there a knocking sound when you lock the wheel left or right ? Dont know why anybody would want to volunteer for that job. Packing the grease in wrecks my head !

    80 Labour isnt bad !

Well it's been changed now, I didn't question him at the time (just wanted to get the NCT out of the way, seemed reasonable). I don't think there was knocking at the time though I wasn't really looking out for it. Steering seems a bit lighter and smoother now so I guess it did some good :/

The part was €80 and the labour was €90 but he also did two brake hoses at the same time so the €120 was a guess (€40 an hour labour + VAT).

€80 labour for 2 boots is quite good.

Anytime I've gotten boots done, on whatever car, it's been €30 including the boot

And those of you that got the pun....:pac:
