    Hi

Thinking of buying a boat for some sea fishing, not going to venture too far ubtil skill are built up etc. But can anyone tell me are there courses run on basic training for boating. Im talking about basic stuff all people should know before taking to the Sea.
I'd like to think I would be able to bring the boat with myself and crew home at the end of the day. Of course one could jump on board an experts shoulder to learn from them, but this can be undependable as they can be hard got etc..

Anyone know a good course? Even an over winter course would be appealing.

    ISA Powerboating Course - Level 1 & 2
Basically the starting point. This will teach you everything you will need to get you started (basics on all aspects of safety, boat handling, man over board, basic route planning, etc etc).

There's lots of places doing these courses around the country.
I only started boating a couple of years ago and didn't put my boat in the water before I got some proper training - was the best decision ever!! ;)

    Hi MotteDai,
I know this thread is 6 months old but just wondering if you made a decision on this at the time?

I'm in a similar situation and currently looking at 2 options:

Seatec Maritime - Training by Seatec
    and

Offshore Courses by the National Marine College of Ireland

Would be very interested to know if you did a course and if so what was yoru experience?
Hoping to have it done and dusted by Summer so time is ticking :-) thanks!

You do realise that all the national maritime college courses are for professional seafarers?

The one you highlighted is for people who are going to work in the offshore oil and gas industry.

Ok thanks, I'm certainly not in that category! that one's off the list for me then.

I think the this is a good place to start and from there they will help you take as far as you want to go with it. http://www.sailing.ie/inside/default.asp?pageId=209

Some of your local sailing clubs may also do courses and may be worth giving them a call, this is Skerries sailing club.

I was going to suggest my club Bray but you are in Mayo

Heres one In Galway City which does a whole range day weekend and Easter Break

Powerboat 1 costs €170 with them
    Powerboat 2 is for fast craft ( over 17 knots) - €250

It isnt in my knowledge but
If you are into fishing, look into fishfinders and GPS for marking your positions.
    Cost a couple of hundred.
    Join a sea angling club.
    Contact some of these people

only female skipper in Britain or Ireland!

    Try before you buy
