new iphone not showing up on pc/itunes

    Just plugged in a new iphone and it's not showing up either in windows explorer or itunes, though when i press the top button to bring it to life, there is a bip from the computer, and a corresponding "bop" when it goes back to sleep. An existing iphone is recognised, so I'm happy it's not the cable/usb port/pc.

    Is there something I'm not doing, or is it back to the shop with it?

    Have you a recent version of iTunes? You've not mentioned what version of the phone you got either.

    How long had you it plugged in for. My iphone won't show up if the battery is very dead. Try plugging it in and leaving it for a while.

    Sorry, not enough info!

    It's a 3GS on itunes 9.2. I've just done the OS4 upgrade on the other iphone, so as I say, it's all working fine except for the phone. It's fully charged, and just doesn't seem to show up at all... :(

    Im having similar issues.A 3gs iPhone that was previously syncing and charging is not being detected. The battery is charging, photos can be uploaded from it and the "USB sounds" are there on connection and disconnection. I installed the new version of iTunes (9.2) and I've had this issue since. Followed the troubleshooting guide on the apple website but no joy there either.

    Okay if your using Vista or Win 7 do this :

    Goto Device Manager where you iphone is being detected and update the driver :

    Location should be this :

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers

    And it should be detected, had the problem and just sorted it now

    Brilliant, thanks a million, worked for me too! Don't know why the pc was reacting differently to 2 of the same thing, but anyhoo!

    Still no joy I'm afraid. Updated the driver. Got a warning that it had not passed Windows Logo Testing. Continued anyway. Its seeing the phone as an imaging device. When its detected it opens a camera and scanner wizard and imports all the photos every time. Charges the battery as well. Still not showing up in itunes though.

    i had EXACTLY this same problem with my iphone 4 and windows 7 !
    i plugged it in, got a beep (but no message in windows that a new device was connected) then a few seconds later, as you said, a bop.

    i tried almost everything untill i found this thread:

    USBAAPL.sys is bundled to iTunes . When you installed, it is automatically put
    USBAAPL.sys driver in your computer.
    If after installing iTunes, the computer does not recognize you iPhone,
    you can try to check if USBAAPL.sys is present in C:\Windows\system32\drivers .
    If you could not find it there try download USBAAPL.SYS driver here : mirror 1
    (The servers hosting the file is down from time to time, if it´s down choose another download mirror)
    If that link is not working try one of the mirror links below:
    mirror 2
    mirror 3

    After making sure USBAAPL.sys is located in your C:\Windows\system32\drivers folder follow the steps below:
    Note: This driver is used by iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, iPod shuffle (3rd generation and later), iPod nano (3rd generation and later), and iPod classic. If you have an earlier model iPod, this set of steps does not apply.
    1. Disconnect the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from the computer.
    2. Take a photo with the iPhone. For iPod touch or iPad, save a screenshot by pressing the Home button and Wake/Sleep buttons and letting go. The screen should flash briefly. (Taking screenshots and saving images on iPod touch requires software version 2.0 or later.)
    3. Open the Device Manager in Windows, as follows:
    Windows XP: Click Start > Run. In the resulting dialog type devmgmt.msc and press Return on the keyboard.
    Windows Vista or Windows 7: Click Start. In the dialog, type devmgmt.msc and press Return on the keyboard. If Windows needs your permission to continue, click "Continue".
    4. Expand the sections labeled as follows. Not all sections may be listed:
    * Imaging Devices
    * Other Devices
    * Portable Devices
    * Universal Serial Bus Controllers
    5. Re-connect your iphone
    6. Look for the entry that recognizes the device as a camera. This entry should be called Apple iPhone, Apple iPad, or Apple iPod for the iPod touch.
    7. Right click the device and select properties, then driver, then update driver.
    Taadaa! Windows should now detect an iphone device and install the correct drivers.
    Hope this helped.
