Flight path information

    Hey all,
I'm looking into purchasing a house in Cork City (to be precise it is in the Lehenaghmore area). If anyone is living near or in this area i would appreciate it if they could let me know if the flight path (for Cork Airport) experiences heavy/frequent or light/infrequent air traffic? i know this might be a slightly impossible question to ask as direction of flights is very much dependent on wind direction etc but any information or advice is very much welcomed. Thanks in advance for any replies.

    It depends on the wind.

I've look at that place on google maps- its on the approach to RWY17 and departures from RWY35 may be an issue.

TBH with you I would not let it turn you off buying a house- after a while you wouldnt notice it. I live right under the approach into Shannon and dont pay any attention (unless I want to!)

Thanks for your response. I'm currently living in the countryside so not many airplanes or low flying ones over my house! so it might take me some time to adjust getting used to it. To be honest i'm more worried about the noise impact a jet engine may have than the visual impact an aircraft has! I know Cork isn't the busiest of airports especially with the state the economy is in now but a general idea of how many aircrafts will be passing per day would be really useful to know.

I agree with neon circles i probably live near enough to him,the only thing that was really loud was omni dc10's taking off at 3am,well used to it now!!!

i'm very familiar with the area, it's not really the arrivals on 17 but the departures off 35 that may be a very small problem, saying that i'd be biased as i make my livelihood in aviation;) like some of the lads here

As the lads said, you get used to the noise -
i'd be more worried about the traffic going down spur hill towards wilton (not to mention the traffic through Togher in the mornings.

why not get a flask of tea, and spend some time in the area, better still go and talk to homeowners in the area

p.s. are these houses the new estate (Lehenaghmore beg - i think, near the cross (old celias pub site)adjacent to the scrap yard? if so you'll have no noise issues

I live about 2 miles from Wellington International airport. Whilst we're quite lucky in the scale of things and get nothing bigger then 737s and a320s it did wake me up initially. After a few days of living near an airport your body gets used to the sound of jets from 6am onwards and it doesnt wake me any more. Sometimes late at night I hear the odd old cargo prop roaring off but in general its amazing how you just get used to the sound and ignore them.

Bear in mind that most people in here enjoy being around aircraft, including myself!

I would recommend printing a map of the area and draw a line that measures aproximately 5 to 10 miles out from the end of each runway. That will show you the direct approach line and aproximate take off line for each runway and potential places where aircraft will probably be most notable. Larger aircraft generally have longer approach and take off lengths.

I think you could also contact the aviation authority regarding timing restrictions for aircraft activity in the area.

A quick google map of the area indicates to me that this Lehenaghmore is not directly under the approach or take of paths, but it is still quite close to the area.

Another thing you could do is have a look at the airport schedule and pick a busy time. Then go and park outside the place you are interested in buying to see whats going on. I'd hate to see someone buying a property and being annoyed about noise.

    Best of luck.

I've ended up putting a deposit down for the house now so looks like there is no turning back. Most people thought i was exaggerating a little bit when they heard that i was making all these enquiries into airplanes and noise etc. lol Cork airport isn't an overly busy airport anyway so i think i could definately become accustomed to the planes passing :D
