Have a 04 Renault Megane saloon 49000 miles nct 02/12 taxed 01/11 very clean outside and in. Blue tooth car thing - 3900euro with my **** box of a 00 megane with lots of bumps and scratches no nct and no tax and well basically drove the feck out of it!

    Good deal or not?

    Don't do it!

    Agreed.

The early models of that Mégane were very poor although I'm told anything past 2006 is well enough screwed together.

Lovely cars I'm sure but if you aren't sympathetic to your cars (and you don't bloody well sound like you are :D), it will absolutely try your patience. Wimmin and cars, like < runs for cover >

What kind of car/ deal are you looking for? What kind of useage do you have.

Even if the car was trouble free I don't think you are being done any favours at €3900 with your old car. These Meganes have a very bad reputation for reliability and their prices should reflect this. €3900 is too high for my liking.

personally id say avoid the megane altogether, a lot of decent saloons to be had for that kind of money nowadays ,

I'd have to agree with all the above, i would just completely avoid a megane of that vintage, especially seeing that the price seems a bit on the high side.

wow, really. No love for the Megane at all. Or is it just French cars in general? As for usage well hard to say. I have put the guts of 25000 miles on the clock in the last two years and yes i didnt really look after my last car, but it never gave me any trouble at all. Thats why i wanted to stick with the same car. Don't want to buy private as no come back really.

I have always like megane. Since my friends mum had a coupe years ago! Feel so uncool!

And hey less of the wimmens and cars things..

/runs off to tLL to start a Men and Motors thread....
    Not like the mag!

I'd say to you that spending €4k doesn't guarantee you you'll have a reliable car. Why not just take a little of your budget and show your own car some love since it's been good to you? They all need the love. It'll work out an awful lot cheaper than replacing because of (what I suspect is) fear of the NCT.

There is a big difference in reliability between the Megane you currently drive and the newer Megane you are looking at. The older Renaults were more reliable and less dependant on electronics which were a curse in the newer Megane.

I brought old car it to a garage and unfortunately to get it up to scratch would cost me the guts of that budget. Its in a bad way. I was a bad car owner. Have gotten warrently extended to a year parts and labour instead of the 3 months. As i told the guy i was thinking about pulling out of the sale. I really like the car and im just going to cross my fingers that i am as lucky again!

    What does the warranty cover?

If its engine and gearbox its a waste of time. It needs to cover the electronics

Find out if it's a 'bumper to bumper' warranty and find out if there are excesses, caps or special terms. Salespeople have a tendency to allow you to believe you have a comprehensive warranty and when there's a claim, you're told 'read the warranty agreement <which I handed you after you handed me the cheque>'.

    Less of the sexism, please.

Seems quite expensive to tell the truth - plenty of massively cheaper private sales around(even including the value of a warranty)
