The Green Hornet

It's official: After months of murmurings, Seth Rogen is set to star as the Green Hornet in the upcoming, eponymous film.

Per EW, Rogen will play the story's hero, Britt Reid, a playboy with time and money on his hands. He inherits his dad's newspaper and starts fighting crime at night with his buddy Kato. Rogen and writing partner Evan Goldberg are writing and producing the film.

The Knocked Up star may seem like an unlikely choice to play a studly, winged crusader in a deal that could end in a stinging disaster. Yet, similarly surprising choices have worked out to be inspired ones in other such flicks, like Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man and even Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man. How do you think the Hornet casting will fly? You have time to mull it over; The movie opens in June 2010.

    I wouldn't have cast him

Well he is writing it, who better to deliver his own lines then himself?

I look forward to it, although he might have to get in better shape, which he sort of did look at the mtv movie awards anyway....

Not aware of 'The Green Hornet' comic book but I do think Rogen's excellent.

    A fantastic writer too.

I wouldn't be expecting too much from this. I get the feeling it'll be a comedy version of the comic (can't imagine Rogen doing it seriously), and I'm getting weary of piss-takes at this stage.

what happened to edgar wirght antman? imdb says 2010, yeah who **** knows the green hornet outside america and under 30

I'm really disappointed by this news. Rogan is a very funny actor and a good writer but The Green Hornet isn't a comedic property.

If you're going to turn a comic or old TV show into a film then don't just rip the piss out of it which I fear they plan on doing with this.

Rogan's not that funny, in fairness.

He's pretty funny looking and I don;t know if I mean that in the good way.

I'm only aware of the comic in passing & never thought of it as a franchise worth getting worked up about - just another generic vigilante comic.

I think the project will go dead, like when Kevin Smith was involved. They should stick to what they do best.

Although that said, Kevin is doing Red State now which has been commented to no end that it is completely away from his genre yet he does it brilliantly. If Rogen can pull it off, kudos to him.

Pffft Kevin Smith has been involved in a lot of comic book adaptations that never got off the ground, Rogen is a good deal more popular in Hollywood then Kevin Smith right now so I'd see no reason why this project isnt going to go ahead...

If it was a serious (for lack of a better word) film the casting of Kato is infinitely more important.

Early rumour is that Stephen Chow will play Kato.

Hmm, I can't really see this working if Rogan does his usual bit. They could do a smart arse, joke cracking Green Hornet but I don't think thats a road they should go near, never mind down.

On the other hand, after reading the article above, Rogan does seem very serious about making it work so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

how serious was the original green hornet?

A bit more serious than original Batman if I remember correctly, it's been years.

    Bruce Lee ftw!

PLEASE don't be a comedy take on it

Stephen Chow has decided not to direct Seth Rogen's superhero movie The Green Hornet, says Variety.
However, the Kung Fu Hustle helmer will still appear in the film as the eponymous hero's sidekick Kato. The directing split has been put down to creative differences.
Based on a radio serial from the 1930s, the Green Hornet is a newspaper publisher who devises an alter-ego to fight crime. The most famous adaptation of the character came in the form of a '60s TV series which starred Bruce Lee as Kato.
The Green Hornet is expected to arrive in cinemas in 2010.

Nathan Fillion would be my choice for The Green Hornet

The Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind director Michel Gondry has stepped up to save The Green Hornet.
A month after Stephen Chow stepped down as the director of the comic book caper, starring Seth Rogen, Gondry has taken it on.
It is still not known if Chow will appear in the film - as Rogen's Hornet sidekick Kato.
Production will begin later this year.

    Rogen is still in

Cameron Diaz is in talks to join the cast of comic book movie Green Hornet.
The actress is reportedly considering an offer to play the female lead in the film, opposite Seth Rogen.
Website EW.com reports Michel Gondry will direct the film, which is set to go before cameras later this summer.

    Rogen and Diaz

Can't stand Seth Rogen and all these SuperBad-esque movies.. Really really hate the lot of them, they're just the same actors appearing in loads of different **** movies week in week out. Anyone see a trailer for "Year One" with Jack Black and Micheal Cera, looks absolutely awful. Two rubbish unfunny actors, and the stupid fans lapping it all up.

The trailer for this has just been released , I dont know what to think of this to be honest

The presence of Michel Gondry is the only thing that gives me any sort of hope for this, although Be Kind Rewind showed he wasn't so good with more 'Hollywood' broad blockbusters.

Plus, I'm very disappointed they aren't going for a 1930s serial kind of style :(

God I kinda hate Seth Rogen now!!!

The trailer surpised me. Thought it be more knock-about comdey/action like Charile's Angles. More of a kick-ass-ish tone to it. They have seem to kept some of Kevin Smith idea's, Cam Diaz seems not to have a lot to do in the film and the 3D seems just added on. But would go see it after that trailer.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Michel Gondry - might as well be Brett Ratner, what a dull, generic looking trailer that is. Mind you, it sounds like a dull, generic movie in the first place...

Wasn't interested, now I am. The trailer really hooked me. The two leads seem to have an interesting comedic dynamic.

Looks even worse that I'd envisioned..

.. and I like Seth Rogen!

Cameron Diaz has only been in 2 films (this and 'Knight And Day') in recent months that caught my attention.. and I'm already sick of seeing her.

It looks exactly like I thought it would. Lot's of fluff and comic set pieces. I doubt it'll be a bad film, just unmemorable.

I didn't think Seth Rogen could pull off this part, but I thought "some actors who've been type-cast really apply themselves to new roles. Keanu did it for The Matrix, so why not Seth?".

Then I forgot that Seth Rogen wrote all the films in which he's been type-cast

This doesn't look like The Green Hornet. It looks like Seth Rogens character from (insert any Seth Rogen film) as the Green Hornet :D

Seth Rogen doesn't have any range, he's the same annoying boring character in all his movies. I hate what Judd Apatow and all his cronies have done to comedy, ie Superbad, Funny People, Pineapple Express etc.

Funny People is pretty unlike the other two you named (or so I understand).

I'm not a fan of that 'stable' myself, but these things come into fashion and drop out of it again all the time. Before Apatow and co, it was the Frat Pack - Will Ferrell, Owen and Luke Wilson, Ben Stiller and a few more (Apatow has connections with them too, but I think you only mean his films with Rogan). They make a few reasonably funny films (Anchorman is quite the cult classic) and a heap of crap. Now, they're not really a collective force in comedy any more. Apatow and co are the same: they've made some stuff people liked and some not so funny stuff. They'll do the same stuff over and over until it doesn't make money any more, and then the talented ones will do something else. Just look at Adventureland - Greg Mottola got his break directing Superbad and then made a funny, charming and deeply personal film.

i find it hard to watch rogen he annoys me

I'll always respect Rogen for his show-stealing performances in stuff like "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared"..

.. but his overexposure nowadays is certainly offputting.

And could probably say the same about Jason Segal for the same reasons.

Just back from a 2D showing, way better than what I had expected after reading some reviews of it. If you like Seth Rogen's kind of comedy, then you'll probably like this. It had a very good chemistry between Green Hornet/Kato

It's a very strong 12A with a lot of violence and probably the most uses of the s**t word I have heard for a 12A! On the negative side it has a much underwritten villain and Cameron Diaz's role is virtually non-existent.

It also has a great cameo!!! The second great performance from this actor within a week!

Basically all of the above. Maybe other than Diaz, think that she is being totally set up for a sequal
